Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,666 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,666 m of the 3,602 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 594 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Airbus A350-1000 taxied from the parking area to runway 07L at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in 4 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 07L, the aircraft used 2,286 m of runway (73 % of its length) and lifted off at 157 kt; ambient conditions were 44 °C with a wind of 6 kt from 149°, including a 5 kt cross-wind component and a 3 kt head-wind component.
The initial climb began 1 mile east of KPHX, climbing from 2,084 ft asl to 32,563 ft asl - a gain of 30,479 ft - in 29 minutes while covering 213 nm.
Level cruise commenced 11 nm west of Crystal, New Mexico, and persisted for 58 minutes, during which 515 nm were flown.
A second climb started 6 nm east of Trumbull Ranch Airport (5NE1) in Nebraska, rising from 33,696 ft asl to 34,998 ft asl - an increase of 1,302 ft - in 2 minutes over a distance of 15 nm.
The subsequent cruise segment began 12 nm west of Mc Ginn Ranch Airport (32NE) near Dunning, Nebraska, lasting 218 minutes and covering 1,950 nm.
A further climb was initiated 8 nm west of Mary's Harbour Airport (CYMH) in Newfoundland, climbing from 35,001 ft asl to 37,668 ft asl - a gain of 2,667 ft - in 3 minutes across 31 nm.
The following cruise leg started 18 nm east of Williams Harbour Airport (CCA6) and continued for 184 minutes, during which 1,583 nm were traversed.
A fourth climb began 21 nm northwest of Belmullet Aerodrome (EIBT) in Ireland, increasing altitude from 37,855 ft asl to 38,978 ft asl - a rise of 1,124 ft - in 2 minutes while covering 15 nm.
The next cruise phase originated 12 nm north of Belmullet and lasted 31 minutes, encompassing 274 nm.
Descent commenced 2 nm east of Bunbury, Cheshire East, England, descending from 38,835 ft asl to 1,653 ft asl - a loss of 37,182 ft - in 24 minutes and covering 140 nm.
A brief level segment over Windsor, England, lasted 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nm.
The final approach to runway 09L at London Heathrow Airport was flown from the west, on a heading of 90.0°, at 4 nm and 1,271 ft agl.
Landing on runway 09L, which is 3,594 m long, occurred with a threshold speed of 144 kt; touchdown was 194 m beyond the touchdown zone at 145 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 168 fpm and a total landing roll of 1,601 m (45 % of the runway).
Runway rollout alignment was reported as perfect, and the aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in less than 1 minute, covering less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 4,744 nm, took 557 minutes, and consumed 64,276 kg of fuel.
The Airbus A350-1000 completed a final approach to runway 09L at EGLL London Heathrow Airport with a score of 97.3 %. The aircraft was established on a heading of 90.0 ° at 4 nm from the threshold, descending to 1,271 ft agl, while local temperature was 20 °C and wind was 1 kt from 90 ° with a 0 kt crosswind component and a 1 kt headwind.
At threshold the height was good and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 144 kt. The flare was executed from the appropriate height, maintaining the slight speed excess.
Touchdown occurred 194 m beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 145 kt was fast, but the vertical rate was good at minus 168 fpm and runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The aircraft rolled out over a total landing distance of 1,601 m, representing 45 % of the 3,594 m runway, and rollout alignment was perfect.
Reduce the threshold speed to the target value and adjust the flare to place the touchdown point within the designated zone; maintaining speed closer to the target will also help keep touchdown speed within the optimal range.
