Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,561 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,561 m of the 2,693 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 371 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport, taking 6 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 21, with the aircraft lifting off after a takeoff distance of 561 meters, which accounted for 23% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 159 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 15°C temperature and winds of 11 knots at 250 degrees. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the headwind was 8 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the airport at Rheinmünster, with the aircraft ascending from 1,417 feet above sea level to 22,498 feet, an increase of 21,081 feet in 9 minutes and covering a distance of 28 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise 2 miles south east of Calw, lasting 5 minutes and covering 37 nautical miles. The enroute descent began 1 mile south of Oberrot-Glashofen UL, with the aircraft descending from 22,461 feet to 2,336 feet, a decrease of 20,125 feet in 16 minutes and covering 68 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28 at Nuremberg Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 279.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,290 feet above ground level. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 2,693 meters, with the threshold height being good. The threshold speed was above the target at 142 knots, while the touchdown distance was good at 374 meters. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast at 134 knots, and the touchdown rate was hard at -406 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at Nuremberg Airport were 13°C temperature and winds of 15 knots at 259 degrees, with a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 14 knots. The total landing distance was 1,480 meters, accounting for 55% of the runway.
After landing, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area, taking 3 minutes and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 141 nautical miles, taking 40 minutes and using 2,005 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Nuremberg Airport (EDDN) with a score of 98.0%. The final approach was conducted from the east, heading 279.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,290 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft was on a precise course for landing on runway 28, which has a length of 2,693 meters.
Upon touchdown, the threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft touched down at the correct point on the runway. However, the threshold speed was above the target speed, coming in at 142 knots. This may have been due to the aircraft's approach speed being slightly higher than intended, but it did not significantly impact the overall landing performance.
The touchdown distance of 374 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down effectively after touchdown. However, the touchdown speed of 134 knots was a little fast, suggesting that the aircraft may have been able to slow down more quickly. The touchdown rate of -406 feet per minute (fpm) was also reported as hard, which may have been due to the aircraft's high speed at touchdown.
Despite these minor issues, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway centerline at touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 13°C and a wind speed of 15 knots from 259°. The crosswind component was relatively low at 5 knots, while the headwind component was 14 knots, which helped to reduce the aircraft's ground speed and make the landing more manageable.
The total landing distance of 1,480 meters was 55% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain its alignment with the runway centerline after touchdown and during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and coming to a stop within a reasonable distance. While there were some minor issues with the touchdown speed and rate, the aircraft's overall performance was good, and the landing was completed with a high degree of precision and control.
