Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,889 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,889 m of the 3,285 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 626 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The Airbus A320 then departed from runway 16 at Wellington International Airport (NZWN), with a takeoff distance of 1,134 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 155 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time were a temperature of 17°C, with a wind speed of 8 knots at 169°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead Wellington International Airport. The climb took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 40 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,034 feet above sea level to 30,830 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,795 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 15 miles northwest of Te Horo, and lasted for 14 minutes, covering a distance of 114 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 20 miles southwest of Piopio, and took 22 minutes to descend from 30,987 feet above sea level to 3,343 feet above sea level, a decrease of 27,644 feet. The aircraft then began another enroute level cruise, this time starting 5 miles east of East Tamaki, and lasting for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The final enroute descent started 2 miles southeast of East Tamaki, and took 2 minutes to descend from 2,778 feet above sea level to 1,219 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,559 feet.
The final approach to runway 23L at Auckland International Airport (NZAA) was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 254.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,203 feet above ground level. However, a go-around was initiated at 814 feet above ground level. The aircraft then landed on runway 23L, which had a length of 3,285 meters. The threshold height at 57 feet above ground level was slightly above the target, while the threshold speed was well above the target at 133 knots.
The touchdown point was 206 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 121 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -307 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.9 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 19°C, with a wind speed of 8 knots at 250°.
The total landing distance was 1,805 meters, which accounted for 55% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 13.4 meters from the centerline. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, a process that took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 280 nautical miles, and the flight took 86 minutes, using 2,857 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed on runway 23L at Auckland International Airport (NZAA) with a score of 82.8%. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 254.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,203 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 3,285 meters.
The threshold height at 57 feet agl was slightly above the target, indicating a minor deviation in the aircraft's descent. However, the threshold speed was well above the target at 133 knots, suggesting that the aircraft was descending at a faster rate than intended. The touchdown point was 206 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight over-shooting of the intended landing spot.
The touchdown speed of 121 knots was a little fast, which could have contributed to the firm touchdown rate of -307 feet per minute (fpm). A firm touchdown rate can be a concern as it may indicate a higher risk of damage to the aircraft's landing gear. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 12.9 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 19°C and a wind speed of 8 knots from 250°. The crosswind component was negligible, but the headwind component was 8 knots, which may have contributed to the aircraft's higher-than-target threshold speed.
The total landing distance was 1,805 meters, which is 55% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down and come to a stop within a reasonable distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 13.4 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations from the target parameters. These deviations may be addressed through further training and practice to improve the aircraft's performance and reduce the risk of damage to the landing gear.
