Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,405 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,056 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 17R at the Orlando International Airport (KMCO). The takeoff distance was 4,070 feet, which accounted for 41% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 152 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 88 degrees Fahrenheit and winds of 9 knots at 140 degrees. The crosswind was 6 knots, while the headwind was 7 knots. After departing from KMCO, the enroute climb started 1 mile southeast of the airport, where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,117 feet above sea level to 25,020 feet above sea level, an increase of 23,904 feet in 9 minutes and covering a distance of 38 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the enroute level cruise started 7 miles southwest of West Melbourne, Florida, and lasted for 9 minutes, covering a distance of 56 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile north of the Tropical Plantation Airport (18FA) in Palm City, Florida. The descent from 25,017 feet above sea level to 1,312 feet above sea level, a decrease of 23,704 feet, took 23 minutes and covered a distance of 78 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 12 at the Miami International Airport (KMIA) was made from the northwest, heading 119.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,294 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 12 was successful, with a runway length of 8,405 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 132 knots. The touchdown distance was 1,056 feet, which was good, but the touchdown speed of 128 knots was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -272 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 81 degrees Fahrenheit and winds of 9 knots at 110 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 9 knots. The total landing distance was 4,316 feet, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. After landing, the aircraft taxiing to the parking from the runway took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 179 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 53 minutes. The aircraft used 4,604 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at Miami International Airport (KMIA) on runway 12, achieving a high score of 99.4%. The final approach was initiated from the northwest, heading 119.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,294 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's approach and landing performance were satisfactory, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 132 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 1,056 feet was also within the expected parameters, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown speed of 128 knots was slightly higher than the ideal speed, which may have resulted in a slightly higher touchdown rate.
The touchdown rate of -272 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or oscillation upon touchdown. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 81°F and a wind speed of 9 knots from 110°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 9 knots, which helped to reduce the aircraft's ground speed and improve the landing performance.
The total landing distance of 4,316 feet was 51% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing performance of the Boeing 737-700 aircraft at KMIA was satisfactory, with a high score of 99.4%. The aircraft's approach and landing performance were smooth and controlled, and the touchdown and rollout phases were executed perfectly.
