Improve the pattern downwind leg
The 45-degrees-behind-the-wing cue assumes you can turn your head and use peripheral vision. Downwind spacing cues like "put the wingtip halfway up the strut" assume a fixed, known eyepoint. Neither survives a monitor unmodified. If you fly on a fixed monitor, stop pretending and fly a numbers-based circuit.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 808 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 808 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 183 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 04 at EGCW Welshpool Airport, where the aircraft, an American Champion Scout, successfully took off after covering a distance of 190 meters, which accounted for 23% of the runway. The liftoff speed was recorded at 68 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind of 1 knot blowing from a direction of 269 degrees, resulting in a negligible crosswind and tailwind.
As the aircraft entered the left-hand pattern, it did so from runway 04, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in just 45 seconds. The subsequent left-hand pattern crosswind maneuver was completed in 73 seconds, with the aircraft maintaining a steady course. The pattern downwind turn was executed at an angle of 45 degrees to the runway, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 04 was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading at 32 degrees and at an altitude of 177 feet above ground level (agl) at a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 47 knots and a touchdown distance of 181 meters. The touchdown rate was perfect at -49 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at takeoff, with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind of 1 knot blowing from a direction of 309 degrees, resulting in a negligible crosswind and a headwind of 0 knots. The total landing distance was 534 meters, accounting for 66% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The total flight distance was 3 nautical miles, which was completed in 7 minutes, and the aircraft used 2 kilograms of fuel during the flight. Overall, the flight was executed smoothly and efficiently, with the aircraft performing well in the given weather conditions.
The American Champion Scout, registration LIONS 26 ANALOG, successfully landed at EGCW Welshpool Airport on runway 04. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 32.0° at an altitude of 177 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway threshold. The pilot maintained a steady course, adhering to the standard final approach procedure.
Upon reaching the runway threshold, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 47 knots, which is well within the recommended threshold speed of 60 knots. The touchdown distance of 181 meters was also satisfactory, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The aircraft's rate of descent at touchdown was -49 feet per minute, which is considered perfect, signifying a precise and stable landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle wind of 1 knot from 309°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component, allowing the pilot to maintain a straight course during the landing. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process.
The total landing distance of 534 meters was 66% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. Overall, the landing was executed flawlessly, with the pilot demonstrating excellent control and precision throughout the approach and landing phases.
