What went well

Touchdown 304 m in — inside the full-score zone
Threshold crossed at 29 ft and 131 kt — both inside band
Straight touchdown — 3.90 m off the centreline, no bounce

What held you back

Firm touchdown — 360 fpm, −0.62 points across the landing and the touchdown
  • Arrival Touchdown · sink rate 360 fpm−0.51
  • Arrival Landing · flare: the descent was not taken out−0.08
  • Arrival Touchdown · 1.40 G at contact−0.03

Next time

Arrival

Continue arresting the sink throughout the flare so it does not return before the mains touch.

What happened: The flare arrested the sink to 7.7 ft, then 175 fpm returned before the mains touched, giving a touchdown rate of 360 fpm. Sink that returns after an early arrest usually produces a firmer touchdown than the flare alone would suggest.

Watch for: Touchdown rate: a little less than 360 fpm next time

See Arrival Touchdown

There are several things that can go wrong during the flare, carrying too much speed over the threshold, starting the flare at the wrong height and inconsistent flight control inputs, all contribute to a poor flare resulting in a hard touchdown or a float down the runway.

Speed and pitch

From brake release to the end of the climb, against time, then the takeoff point by point.

Rotated at 137 kt, on the 138 kt target, and lifted off at 149 kt 4.6 s later, the nose coming up at 1.6° a second. Climb 3 held close to its 162 kt target, at 161 kt on average.

How to read this

Two traces from brake release: the airspeed on top, and below it the pitch, which is how far the nose is above the horizon. The dashed green line is the speed to rotate at for this aircraft at its weight, and the green dot is where the nose started to come up. The figures at liftoff are the pitch then and how fast the nose came up, in degrees a second. The shaded stretch is Climb 3, the part of the climb scored on holding the climb speed.

Side view from the start of the roll to the end of Climb 3 at 954 ft.

Reached 35 ft with 1,452 m of runway left; gear up at 23 ft, inside the 400 ft that gets full marks; then climbing at 2,390 fpm on average to 954 ft.

How to read this

The takeoff from the side: the height above the runway against the distance along it. The numbers along the runway are the speeds reached at each point. Lifting off in the amber last quarter of the runway costs marks for the roll length. The gear-up ring is coloured by its mark. The shaded stretch is Climb 3, scored on its average speed against the target.

Plan view the roll down the 3,660 m runway.

Rolled from 69 m in, drifted 5 m left of the centreline and was back on it to lift off. Airborne 50 % of the way down the runway, before the 75 % line.

How to read this

The roll from above, with your left at the top. The line is where the wheels went, and "widest" is the furthest you drifted off the centreline. Lifting off before the amber 75 % line gets full marks for the roll length.

The stabilisation gates

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out. These checks are the approach's score.

Five checks, one gate300 ft 100.005 of 5

Sink rate460 fpm

On speed+7.3 kt

Still turning onto final at the lower gate, so the centreline and wings level are not asked there - the aeroplane was not lined up yet, and was banked because it was turning. The other checks are marked as usual.

When the approach was stable

Every check met from 0.8 nm, about 320 ft above the runway, to the threshold, after the 300 ft gate. The last to settle was the wings.

How to read this

Each line is one of the gate checks, run along the whole final rather than only at the gates: green where it would have passed, amber where it would not. The glideslope, centreline and speed lines use the bands in the charts beside this card. The sink rate is allowed what the glideslope needs at your ground speed plus 600 fpm, the wings 10° of bank, and the gear and flap are read from when you moved the levers. The bottom line is green where every check held at once, ignoring blips shorter than 0.2 nm, and the sentence above it says from where it held to the threshold. A ring is a stabilisation gate, where the checks in the table were taken.

The approach to KSBA 25

The final from 4 nm, with the stabilisation gates on it.

Profile height against the 3° glideslope, with its 1° band in green.

High from 4 nm to 3.1 nm (up to 580 ft over), then back on it to the threshold.

How to read this

Your height above the runway against the distance still to go. The glideslope is the steady descent path to the aiming point, 305 m past the threshold: 3° here, which is about 320 ft for every nautical mile out, crossing the threshold at about 50 ft. The row under the distances is the height it puts you at. Inside the green band your path is drawn green; outside it, amber. A ring is a stabilisation gate: green when every check there passed, amber with the failed checks named beside it.

Plan distance off the extended centreline, your left at the top, with the 1° band. Sideways distances are drawn 3× larger than distances along the final.

Joined 4,774 m left of the centreline, then inside the band from 1.1 nm to the threshold.

How to read this

Looking down from above, flying left to right towards the runway: up the page is left of the centreline, down is right. Sideways distances are stretched so that small drifts show, so a line that looks wild here may be only a few tens of feet. The labels are how far off you were at each distance, amber when outside the band.

Speed against the approach speed. The green band runs from 5 kt slow to 31 kt fast at the 1,000 ft gate, closing to 19 at 500 ft and 10 at the threshold.

Inside the speed band all the way, between +5 kt and +26 kt on the approach speed of 124 kt.

How to read this

Your indicated airspeed down the final, against the approach speed for this aircraft at its landing weight. The band allows 5 kt slow and more on the fast side further out, closing as you get lower, because the speed is expected to come off on the way down. The figures are knots above (+) or below (−) the approach speed.

The flare95.25

Great landing flare. It lost 4.7 points, partly for taking only 378 fpm of the sink out.

The crosswind

6 kt across from the left, which takes about 3° of crab to hold the centreline at 126 kt. Touched down with 2° of it still on, wings level.

Wind 179° at 7 kt · 0 kt head · 6 kt across

How to read this

The wind is the one recorded at the landing, split along the runway (headwind or tailwind) and across it. To hold the centreline in a crosswind the nose points a little into wind - the crab - and is straightened with rudder just before the wheels touch, often with the into-wind wing lowered to stop the drift. These are the nose against the direction you were actually moving, and the wings, at the moment of touchdown. Shown for reading; not marked.

The stop

From 126 kt at touchdown to taxi speed (30 kt) in 32 s, an average deceleration of 0.16 g.

How to read this

Your ground speed from the moment the wheels touched until you were down to taxi speed, against the distance rolled. A steep line is hard braking, a shallow one a long, gentle roll. For scale, an airliner's lowest autobrake setting decelerates at about 0.15 g, a medium one about 0.3 g. Shown for reading; not marked.

Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.

Crossed the threshold at 29 ft, 21 ft below the 50 ft target; began the flare at 20 ft. Touched down 304 m in, close to the ideal 305 m.

How to read this

The last stretch of the approach and the touchdown, from the side. The height is stretched so that the last few feet show: 80 ft top to bottom, against 1,524 m across. The dashed line is the ideal, 50 ft over the threshold and down 305 m in. The flare ring is where you began raising the nose, and "descent slowed" is where the sink came off; the figures beside them are the sink rate, pitch and speed at that point.

Sink and pitch — through the flare, lined up with the side view.

The sink went from 560 fpm at the flare to 190 fpm at 8 ft, then back up to 360 fpm at touchdown. The nose came up 0.8° on the way down.

Lined up with the side view above, so a point on one sits under the same point of the other. On top, how fast you were coming down: 0 is level, and −600 is 600 ft a minute down. Below, the pitch. In a flare the nose comes up and the descent slows towards 0. The figure at the touchdown line is your touchdown rate.

Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,842 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.

Touched down 3.9 m right of the centreline, and steered back to 0.2 m left by the end of the rollout.

How to read this

The runway from above, with your left at the top. Touching down inside the green bracket scores full marks for the distance. The shaded part is the rollout, up to where it ended. The arrow beside the runway is the crosswind, pointing the way the air was moving, so it pushed the aircraft that way.

Flight narrative

The Embraer E175 taxied from the parking area to runway 34L at KSLC, a movement that lasted 6 minutes and covered 2 nm.

Take-off was performed on runway 34L, using 1,860 m (51 % of the runway). Rotation occurred at 137 kt. Local temperature was 11 °C.

During the initial climb the aircraft reached 1,000 ft agl in 21 seconds, averaging 2,205 fpm and attaining 161 kt at the top of the segment.

Climb continued from 5,163 ft asl to 31,245 ft asl in 12 minutes, covering 70 nm, beginning about 1 mile north-west of KSLC.

The aircraft then levelled at 32,000 ft asl for 66 minutes, covering 445 nm, starting 6 miles south of TVSF.

Descent began from 31,060 ft asl to 298 ft asl in 22 minutes, covering 110 nm, starting 9 miles south-west of Alpaugh.

On final approach to runway 25 at KSBA, the descent from 443 ft agl to 48 ft agl took 36 seconds. Stabilisation checks at 500 ft above the runway were met for gear down, landing flap, sink rate, glideslope and speed. Configuration was gear down at 2,212 ft agl and 185 kt; final flap position 6 was selected at 1,735 ft agl and 154 kt.

Landing occurred on runway 25, whose length is 1,842 m. The threshold speed was slightly above target at 131 kt. The flare was described as great. Touchdown was at 304 m down the runway, with a speed of 126 kt (a little fast) and a firm rate of minus 360 fpm. The touchdown point was 4.4 m off centreline but no bounce occurred. Total landing distance was 945 m (51 % of the runway) and the rollout alignment was very good. Local temperature was 17 °C.

After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area in 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.

Overall, the flight covered 631 nm in 111 minutes and used 2,210 kg of fuel.
