Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,088 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 471 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking to the runway, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-900, then departed from runway 05 at DNMA Maiduguri International Airport in Maiduguri, Nigeria. The takeoff distance was 99 meters, which is 3% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 150 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 21°C and a wind speed of 6 knots at 40°.
As the aircraft climbed out of Maiduguri, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile northeast of the airport. The climb took 36 minutes to reach a height of 37,911 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,835 feet from the initial altitude of 2,076 feet. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 262 nautical miles. The enroute climb was followed by a level cruise, which began 40 miles northeast of DRNG Nguigmi Airport in Nguigmi, Niger. This cruise phase lasted for 118 minutes and covered a distance of 977 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent, which started 17 miles northeast of Remada in Tataouine, Tunisia. The descent took 11 minutes to reduce the altitude from 38,038 feet to 1,284 feet, a decrease of 36,754 feet. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 81 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 09 at DTTJ Djerba Zarzis International Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 88.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,250 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 09 was successful, with a touchdown point 50 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target at 135 knots, but the touchdown rate was good at -170 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.4 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at takeoff, with a temperature of 21°C and a wind speed of 6 knots at 40°.
The total landing distance was 964 meters, which is 31% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,326 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 173 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 8,797 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-900 aircraft successfully landed at Djerba Zarzis International Airport, achieving a score of 99.7%. The final approach to runway 09 was conducted from the west, with a heading of 88.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,250 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 50 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is slightly outside the expected area. The touchdown speed of 126 knots was slightly faster than the target speed, indicating that the pilots may have needed to apply more braking force to bring the aircraft to a stop. However, the touchdown rate of -170 feet per minute was within the acceptable range, suggesting that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the landing.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 3.4 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilots' alignment during the final approach. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilots were able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 21°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 40°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions were relatively calm, which may have contributed to the successful landing.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft coming to a stop within 964 meters of the runway threshold, which is 31% of the runway length. While there were some minor deviations from the expected landing parameters, the pilots were able to maintain control of the aircraft and bring it to a safe stop.
