Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 998 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 998 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 284 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 26 at EDWY Norderney Airport, a small airport located in Norderney, Lower Saxony, Germany. The aircraft, a M500, accelerated down the runway and lifted off at a speed of 88 kt, covering a distance of 390 meters, which was 39% of the runway's length. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 18 °C and a wind speed of 13 kt blowing from 249 °, resulting in a 4 kt crosswind and a 13 kt headwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile east of Norderney, rising from an altitude of 781 ft above sea level to 2,969 ft asl in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 3 nm. This rapid ascent was followed by a brief level cruise 1 mile north of EDWS Norden-Norddeich Airport, lasting 2 minutes and covering 5 nm.
The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile northwest of Osteel, Lower Saxony, Germany, descending from 2,966 ft asl to 223 ft asl in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nm. Following this descent, the aircraft entered another level cruise 2 miles northeast of EDWE Emden Airport, lasting 4 minutes and covering 3 nm.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its final approach to runway 25 at EDWE Emden Airport from the east, heading 249.0 ° at an altitude of 85 ft above ground level. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17 °C and a wind speed of 13 kt blowing from 259 °, resulting in a 2 kt crosswind and a 13 kt headwind.
The aircraft landed safely on runway 25, which was 998 meters long, with a touchdown distance of 283 meters, which was 58% of the runway's length. The touchdown speed was 79 kt, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -149 fpm. Although the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.5 meters from the centerline, the runway rollout alignment was very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 1 minute and covering less than 1 nm. The total flight distance was 20 nm, and the flight duration was 16 minutes, during which the aircraft used 40 kg of fuel.
The aircraft in question, a M500, successfully landed at EDWE Emden Airport, achieving a high score of 95.2%. The final approach was conducted from the east, heading 249.0° at an altitude of 85 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The pilot demonstrated good control and precision, resulting in a smooth touchdown.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 25, which has a length of 998 meters. The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was maintained at 86 knots, indicating a well-executed approach. The touchdown distance of 283 meters was also within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 79 knots was smooth and controlled.
The touchdown rate of -149 feet per minute (fpm) was another indicator of the pilot's skill and control. However, there was a slight deviation from the centerline, with the runway touchdown position being 6.5 meters off-center. This minor misalignment did not significantly impact the overall performance of the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 17°C and a wind speed of 13 knots from 259°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 13 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the approach.
The total landing distance of 577 meters was 58% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was excellent, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and stability during the post-landing phase. Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilot demonstrating a high level of skill and precision.
