Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,272 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,272 m of the 3,986 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,101 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at EDDV Hannover Airport, a process that took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 27L, with a takeoff distance of 1,056 meters, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 9 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 219 degrees.
The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was also 2 knots. As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead EDDV Hannover Airport. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,221 feet above sea level to 30,935 feet above sea level, an increase of 29,715 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 96 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 2 miles northwest of Nebra, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. This phase of the flight lasted for 9 minutes and covered a distance of 72 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase started 1 mile east of Marktleuthen, Bavaria, Germany, and took the aircraft from an altitude of 30,191 feet above sea level to 2,750 feet above sea level, a decrease of 27,441 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 108 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 08L at EDDM Munich Airport was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 83.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,268 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 08L, which had a length of 3,986 meters. The threshold height at 85 feet above ground level was significantly above the target, while the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 140 knots.
The touchdown point was 689 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 137 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -389 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 15.8 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -1 degree Celsius and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 0 degrees, with a crosswind component of 1 knot and a headwind component of 0 knots.
The total landing distance was 2,195 meters, which accounted for 55% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 16.0 meters from the centerline. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 284 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 55 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 2,387 kilograms.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed on runway 08L at EDDM Munich Airport, but the landing was not without its challenges. The final approach was initiated from the west, heading 83.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,268 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was significantly beyond the designated touchdown zone, located 689 meters down the runway.
The touchdown speed of 137 knots was slightly above the target speed, indicating that the aircraft may have been slightly fast on touchdown. The touchdown rate was firm, with a descent rate of -389 feet per minute, which is within acceptable limits. However, the runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned from the centerline, deviating by 15.8 meters.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of -1°C and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 0°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component of 1 knot and a headwind of 0 knots. The runway length at EDDM Munich Airport is 3,986 meters, which is more than sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance.
The total landing distance was 2,195 meters, which is 55% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. However, the runway rollout alignment was also misaligned from the centerline, deviating by 16.0 meters. This suggests that the aircraft may have experienced some difficulties in maintaining a straight course during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the Airbus A320 was able to safely touch down on the runway and come to a stop within a reasonable distance. However, the misalignments during the touchdown and rollout phases highlight the need for further improvement in the aircraft's handling and control during these critical phases of flight.
