Track the centreline on final
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
At the 300 ft gate: off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 548 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 548 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 131 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Herowena Airstrip (AYHX) in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, the Kodiak 100 aircraft began its takeoff roll on runway 35. The aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 62 kt, achieving lift-off in a distance of 318 m, which represented 58% of the available runway length. The local weather conditions at the time were characterized by a temperature of 15 °C and a light wind of 2 kt from a direction of 269°, resulting in a negligible crosswind component.
As the aircraft transitioned to the enroute climb phase, it began to ascend from an initial altitude of 5,046 ft above sea level to a cruising altitude of 5,193 ft, a gain of 148 ft in just 1 minute. This climb was achieved while covering a distance of 2 nm. The aircraft continued on its planned route, eventually entering the final approach phase to runway 17 at AYHX Herowena Airstrip. The approach was conducted from a heading of 176.0°, with the aircraft descending from an altitude of 479 ft above ground level to touch down on the runway.
The landing was executed with a threshold speed of 61 kt, which was slightly below the target value. The touchdown distance of 129 m was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 55 kt was also satisfactory. The touchdown rate of 24 fpm was ideal, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 11.9 m. The total landing distance of 366 m represented 67% of the available runway length, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centreline. The aircraft used a total of 9 kg of fuel for the 4 nm flight, which lasted approximately 4 minutes.
The final approach to runway 17 at AYHX Herowena Airstrip from the north was executed with a heading of 176.0° at 1 nm and 479 ft above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a good threshold height achieved. However, the threshold speed was a little below the target at 61 kt, indicating a slight deviation from the optimal landing configuration.
The touchdown characteristics were good, with a touchdown distance of 129 m and a touchdown speed of 55 kt, both of which were within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of 24 fpm was perfect, demonstrating a smooth and controlled descent. Unfortunately, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 11.9 m from the centreline, which was also reflected in the runway rollout alignment. This slight deviation from the centreline may have been due to the 2 kt crosswind, which was blowing from a direction of 269°.
The total landing distance of 366 m was 67% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The overall score for this landing was 85.3%, reflecting a good performance in terms of approach quality, touchdown characteristics, and landing distance. However, the misalignment of the touchdown and rollout positions from the centreline detracted from the overall score. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind of 2 kt at 269°, did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing.
