Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,771 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,771 m of the 3,509 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 691 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by Vueling, with the aircraft registration EC-MGZ. The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 16 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles (nm). The aircraft then departed from runway 24R at LEBL Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, a major airport in Barcelona, Spain.
During takeoff, the aircraft lifted off at a speed of 164 knots (kt) and covered a distance of 1,736 meters, which was 60% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 18°C, with a wind speed of 4 kt at 70°. The aircraft experienced a tailwind of 4 kt, which contributed to its smooth takeoff.
After takeoff, the aircraft began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport. The climb phase involved a significant increase in altitude, from 1,018 feet above sea level (asl) to 13,885 ft asl, covering a distance of 20 nm in just 6 minutes. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nm.
The flight continued with a series of enroute climbs and level cruises, with the aircraft reaching altitudes of up to 27,087 ft asl. The climb phase from 14,448 ft asl to 27,087 ft asl covered a distance of 52 nm in 7 minutes. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 38 minutes and covered a distance of 277 nm.
As the flight approached its destination, the aircraft began its descent phase, which started 4 miles south of Varigotti, Italy. The descent phase involved a significant decrease in altitude, from 27,779 ft asl to 12,139 ft asl, covering a distance of 51 nm in 9 minutes. The aircraft then entered a series of level cruise phases, which lasted for short periods and covered short distances.
The final approach to runway 35L at LIMC Milan Malpensa International Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 349.0° at an altitude of 1,253 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was smooth, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 132 kt and a touchdown rate of -145 feet per minute (fpm). The touchdown point was 271 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.3 meters from the centerline.
The total landing distance was 1,687 meters, which was 48% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nm.
Overall, the flight was completed in 102 minutes, covering a total distance of 483 nm and using 4,745 kilograms of fuel. The flight was operated by a Vueling aircraft with the registration EC-MGZ, and the local weather conditions at the time of takeoff and landing were characterized by temperatures of 18°C and 9°C, respectively, with wind speeds of 4 kt at 70° and 4 kt at 20°, respectively.
Aircraft Vueling EC-MGZ successfully landed at LIMC Milan Malpensa International Airport, achieving a score of 93.3%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the south, heading 349.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,253 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a smooth final approach, maintaining a good threshold height and speed of 142 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed on runway 35L, which has a length of 3,509 meters. The touchdown point was 271 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, but the touchdown speed of 132 knots was within the acceptable range. The touchdown rate was also smooth, at -145 feet per minute (fpm). However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 7.3 meters.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 9°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 20°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,687 meters, which is 48% of the runway length. Notably, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was executed well, with the pilot demonstrating good control and adherence to standard operating procedures. However, the slight misalignment of the touchdown position and the touchdown point being beyond the designated zone are areas for improvement.
