Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,744 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,744 m of the 3,000 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 918 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Milano Linate Airport, taking approximately 8 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 36, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 146 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 160°.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it passed overhead the Idroscalo Milan, a point located in the Lombardia region of Italy. The climb phase of the flight saw the aircraft ascend from an altitude of 1,385 feet above sea level to 36,931 feet, an increase of 35,546 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 135 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase began overhead the town of Impruneta in the Toscana region, lasting for 33 minutes and covering a distance of 223 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent phase, starting 61 miles southwest of the town of Ponza in the Lazio region. The descent saw the aircraft drop from an altitude of 36,911 feet to 1,347 feet, a decrease of 35,564 feet in 29 minutes, covering a distance of 118 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 07 at Falcone-Borsellino Airport was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading at an angle of 67.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,299 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 07 was successful, with the aircraft touching down at a speed of 130 knots, which was slightly faster than the recommended threshold speed. The touchdown point was located 499 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown rate was fair at -290 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 3.7 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 17°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 40°.
The total landing distance was 1,661 meters, which was 55% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled deceleration of the aircraft after touchdown. The taxiing phase from the runway to the parking area took approximately 6 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 486 nautical miles, taking a total of 101 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,661 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at Falcone–Borsellino Airport, scoring 89.2% in the evaluation. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 67.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,299 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a smooth final approach, achieving a good threshold height and maintaining a suitable threshold speed of 136 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 499 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is slightly off-center. The touchdown speed of 130 knots was a bit faster than ideal, but the touchdown rate of -290 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 3.7 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 17°C and a gentle wind of 4 knots at 40°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. These conditions likely contributed to the smooth landing.
The total landing distance of 1,661 meters was 55% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was excellent, indicating that the pilot maintained control and stability during the landing roll.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations from the ideal performance. The pilot's skills and experience were evident in the smooth execution of the approach and landing, despite the slight misalignments and slightly fast touchdown speed.
