Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,830 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,830 m of the 1,881 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,267 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 24R at Palma de Mallorca Airport, LEPA. The Boeing 737-800 took off with a takeoff distance of 1,172 meters, which was 37% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 157 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 210 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile west of Palma de Mallorca Airport. The climb started from an altitude of 1,062 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 10,460 feet above sea level, an increase of 9,398 feet in just 4 minutes. The aircraft covered a distance of 14 nautical miles during this climb phase.
After reaching the initial cruise altitude, the aircraft leveled off and began its enroute level cruise overhead Camp de Mar, a location in the Comunitat Autonoma de les Illes Balears, Spain. This cruise phase lasted for 7 minutes and covered a distance of 35 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another climb phase 33 miles northwest of Estellencs, a location in the Comunitat Autonoma de les Illes Balears, Spain. This climb phase was more significant, with the aircraft increasing its altitude from 10,534 feet above sea level to 35,023 feet above sea level, an increase of 24,489 feet in 13 minutes. The aircraft covered a distance of 82 nautical miles during this climb phase.
After reaching the higher cruise altitude, the aircraft leveled off and began its enroute level cruise 1 mile northeast of La Selva del Camp, a location in the Catalunya region of Spain. This cruise phase was the longest, lasting for 64 minutes and covering a distance of 461 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its enroute descent 1 mile northwest of Saint-Carreuc, a location in the Bretagne region of France. The descent phase was significant, with the aircraft decreasing its altitude from 34,217 feet above sea level to 2,552 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,665 feet in 32 minutes. The aircraft covered a distance of 171 nautical miles during this descent phase.
After reaching a lower altitude, the aircraft leveled off and began its enroute level cruise 4 miles northwest of Stogursey, a location in the Somerset region of England. This cruise phase was brief, lasting for 5 minutes and covering a distance of 17 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 09 at Bristol Airport, EGGD, was made from the west, with the aircraft heading 87.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,196 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 09 at EGGD was made with a runway length of 1,881 meters. The threshold height at 64 feet above ground level was above the target, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 142 knots. The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed was good at 118 knots, and the touchdown rate was firm at -387 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.3 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 160 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 1 knot.
The total landing
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at EGGD Bristol Airport, but with some notable observations. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 87.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,196 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 09, which has a length of 1,881 meters.
The threshold height at 64 feet agl was above the target, indicating that the aircraft was slightly higher than desired when reaching the runway threshold. Additionally, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 142 knots, suggesting that the aircraft was slightly faster than required when reaching the threshold. Despite these minor deviations, the touchdown speed of 118 knots was considered good, and the touchdown rate of -387 feet per minute (fpm) was firm.
However, the touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. This may indicate that the aircraft was not fully configured for landing or that the approach was not perfectly aligned with the runway centerline. The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 7.3 meters from the centerline, which may have contributed to the long touchdown point.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 5 knots at 160°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 1 knot. The total landing distance was 1,746 meters, which is 93% of the available runway length.
Despite the minor issues with the touchdown point and runway alignment, the runway rollout alignment was very good. Overall, the landing was considered successful, but with some areas for improvement to optimize the approach and touchdown.
