Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,594 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,594 m of the 2,617 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 278 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 33 at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,291 meters, which is 40% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 156 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 19 knots from a direction of 300 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 10 knots and a headwind of 16 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile southwest of Langenhorn, a town in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany. The climb started from an altitude of 1,079 feet above sea level and reached a maximum altitude of 38,245 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,166 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 139 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began overhead Wijnjewoude, a town in the Provincie Friesland, The Netherlands. This phase of the flight lasted for 47 minutes and covered a distance of 329 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 2 miles northeast of Ince Blundell, a town in Sefton, England. The descent started from an altitude of 37,984 feet above sea level and reached a minimum altitude of 1,536 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,448 feet in 25 minutes, covering a distance of 113 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28L at EIDW Dublin Airport was made from the east, heading 276.0 degrees at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,310 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 28L, which has a length of 2,617 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 138 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 276 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 136 knots. The touchdown rate was hard at -424 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.4 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 21 knots from a direction of 190 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 21 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. The total landing distance was 1,513 meters, which is 58% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took approximately 6 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 589 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 1 hour and 8 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 4,643 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed on runway 28L at Dublin Airport (EIDW) with a score of 96.2%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the east, heading 276.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,310 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was conducted with a good threshold height, which is a critical factor in ensuring a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 137 kt, coming in at 138 kt. This minor deviation from the target speed did not significantly impact the overall landing performance. The touchdown distance of 276 meters was also within acceptable limits, indicating that the aircraft's descent and flare were well-executed.
However, the touchdown speed of 136 kt was a little fast, which may have contributed to a hard touchdown rate of -424 feet per minute (fpm). A hard touchdown rate can put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and may also affect the comfort of the passengers. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.4 meters from the centerline, which may require some adjustments during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 22°C and a wind speed of 21 kt from 190°. The crosswind component was 21 kt, while the headwind component was a relatively minor 2 kt. These conditions did not appear to significantly impact the landing performance.
The total landing distance of 1,513 meters was 58% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and was able to bring the aircraft to a stop safely.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations from the target speeds and touchdown rates. These deviations did not significantly impact the overall landing performance, and the pilot was able to bring the aircraft to a safe stop.
