Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,347 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 304 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 20R at KSNA John Wayne Orange County International Airport. The takeoff distance was 892 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 141 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 11 knots at 220 degrees. This resulted in a 2-knot crosswind and an 11-knot headwind. As the aircraft took off, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead KSNA John Wayne Orange County International Airport. The climb took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,049 feet above sea level to 36,715 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,665 feet, in 13 minutes and covering a distance of 112 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 8 miles north of Goleta, California. This phase lasted for 22 minutes and covered a distance of 536 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 11 miles west of 3S6 Toketee State Airport in Clearwater, Oregon. The descent took the aircraft from an altitude of 36,630 feet above sea level to 1,313 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,317 feet, in 18 minutes and covering a distance of 139 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28L at KPDX Portland International Airport was made from the southeast, with a heading of 299.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,278 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 28L was successful, with a touchdown distance of 307 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target at 148 knots, while the touchdown rate was firm at -303 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 5 knots at 306 degrees. This resulted in a 1-knot crosswind and a 5-knot headwind. The total landing distance was 1,353 meters, which accounted for 40% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered a distance of 793 nautical miles and took 59 minutes to complete. The aircraft used 5,434 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Portland International Airport (KPDX) on runway 28L. The final approach was initiated from the southeast, heading 299.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,278 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, which is a critical aspect of a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 147 kt, registering at 148 kt. However, the touchdown distance of 307 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 146 kt was a little fast, but this did not significantly impact the overall landing performance.
The touchdown rate of -303 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a controlled and stable touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, which is essential for a safe and efficient landing. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 24°C and a gentle headwind of 5 kt from a direction of 306°.
The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 kt, which further contributed to a smooth landing. The total landing distance of 1,353 meters was 40% of the runway length, indicating a well-executed landing. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control during the landing phase.
Overall, the Boeing 737-800 aircraft landed safely and efficiently at KPDX, with a score of 98.4%. The landing performance was characterized by a good threshold height, a firm touchdown rate, and a smooth rollout. The favorable weather conditions and the pilot's expertise contributed to a successful landing.
