Slow down before tight turns
Twenty knots on a monitor produces the visual sensation of about ten. The advice to "taxi at a walking pace" cannot fix this, because your sense of walking pace is exactly the thing that's broken. Put the groundspeed readout in your scan and obey it for the next fifty flights, the way a student pilot leans on the airspeed indicator before learning to read attitude.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,548 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,548 m of the 2,182 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 407 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 28L at Portland International Airport (KPDX). The takeoff distance was 903 meters, which accounted for 27% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 170 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 10°C and a wind speed of 4 knots at 190°. The crosswind was 4 knots, and the tailwind was 1 knot. After departing from KPDX, the enroute climb started 1 mile east of Bridgeton, Oregon. The aircraft climbed from 1,028 feet above sea level to 37,083 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,056 feet, in 13 minutes and covering 75 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the enroute level cruise started 1 mile south east of Cubehole Airport (3OR1) in Brownsville, Oregon. The cruise lasted 42 minutes and covered 320 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 1 mile east of Soda Bay, California. The descent from 37,059 feet above sea level to 1,336 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,724 feet, took 22 minutes and covered 102 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 12R at Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (KSJC) was made from the north west, heading 139.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,287 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 12R, which had a length of 2,182 meters, was successful, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 139 knots. The touchdown distance was 408 meters, and the touchdown speed was 133 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -220 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at KSJC were a temperature of 18°C and a wind speed of 5 knots at 167°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 4 knots. The total landing distance was 1,468 meters, which accounted for 67% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. After landing, the aircraft taxiing to the parking from the runway took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 504 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 85 minutes. The aircraft used 9,666 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at KSJC Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport on runway 12R. The final approach was executed from the northwest, heading 139.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,287 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated a high level of proficiency in its approach, achieving a score of 99.7%.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 133 knots, which was slightly above the recommended threshold speed of 139 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 408 meters was within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -220 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, indicating a moderate rate of descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a gentle wind of 5 knots from a direction of 167°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions contributed to a smooth and stable approach.
The total landing distance of 1,468 meters was 67% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft had sufficient stopping distance available. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill and control during the landing phase.
Overall, the landing of the Boeing 777-300 at KSJC Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport was a successful and well-executed operation, with the aircraft demonstrating a high level of proficiency and control throughout the approach and landing phases.
