Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,692 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 619 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft, an AT802 Aerial Application Sprayer, taxiing from the parking area to the runway at KRSW Southwest Florida International Airport. This process took approximately 6 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 06, with a takeoff distance of 247 meters, which accounted for 7% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 0 knots, indicating a smooth and controlled takeoff.
As the aircraft climbed, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and winds blowing at 8 knots from a direction of 90 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 6 knots. The enroute climb started approximately 1 mile southeast of Gateway, Florida, and involved a vertical ascent from 711 feet above sea level to 759 feet above sea level, an increase of 47 feet in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 2 miles east of KRSW Southwest Florida International Airport and lasted for 11 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 9 nautical miles. The landing was conducted on runway 05 at KFMY Page Field, a runway with a length of 1,692 meters. The threshold height at 58 feet above ground level was slightly above the target, while the threshold speed at 0 knots was well below the target, requiring the pilot to exercise caution to avoid stalling.
The touchdown point was 346 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 0 knots and a perfect touchdown rate of 0 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.1 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those encountered during takeoff, with a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius and winds blowing at 10 knots from a direction of 91 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 7 knots and a headwind of 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,051 meters, accounting for 62% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area, a process that took less than 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 14 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 18 minutes, with a fuel consumption of -1 kilogram, indicating a slight fuel gain during the flight.
The AT802 Aerial Application Sprayer successfully landed on runway 05 at KFMY Page Field, achieving an overall score of 86.2%. The aircraft touched down 346 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a notable deviation from the target. However, the touchdown speed was satisfactory, and the touchdown rate was perfect at 0 feet per minute (fpm), indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned, deviating by 3.1 meters from the centerline. This could be attributed to the aircraft's approach path or the pilot's decision to touch down slightly off-center. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control and stability during the landing roll.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 24°C and a moderate wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 91°. The crosswind and headwind components were both 7 knots, which is relatively low and should not have significantly impacted the landing. The threshold height at 58 feet above ground level (agl) was slightly above the target, and the threshold speed was well below the target, indicating that the pilot took care to avoid stalling the aircraft during the approach.
The total landing distance of 1,051 meters was 62% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot executed a well-controlled approach and landing, taking advantage of the available runway length to minimize the landing distance. Overall, the landing was satisfactory, with some minor deviations from the target, but the pilot's skills and the aircraft's performance were evident in the smooth and controlled touchdown.
