Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,757 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 447 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 5 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The Airbus A320 then departed from runway 20L at Santos Dumont Airport, with a takeoff distance of 1,055 meters, which was 80% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 146 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 5 knots at 127 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 3 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile south east of Rio de Janeiro, and climbed from an altitude of 697 feet above sea level to 33,117 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,420 feet, in 14 minutes and covering 71 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 25 miles south of Ilha dos Porcos Grandes Airport, and lasted 5 minutes, covering 34 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 15 miles south east of Ubatuba Gastão Madeira State Airport, and descended from 33,112 feet above sea level to 3,837 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,275 feet, in 21 minutes and covering 98 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 17R at Congonhas Airport was made from the north west, with a heading of 148.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,217 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 17R, which had a length of 1,757 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 140 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 444 meters, but the touchdown speed was fast at 138 knots, and the touchdown rate was firm at -334 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.3 meters from the centreline, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 8.4 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 130 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,147 meters, which was 65% of the runway length. The total flight distance was 210 nautical miles, and the flight took 50 minutes to complete, using 1,798 kilograms of fuel. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at SBSP Congonhas Airport, achieving a high score of 94.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the northwest, heading 148.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,217 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with good control, and the aircraft landed safely on runway 17R, which has a length of 1,757 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was above the target speed of 140 kt. However, the touchdown speed of 138 kt was slightly faster than desired, indicating that the aircraft may have touched down with a bit more force than necessary. The touchdown distance of 444 meters was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of -334 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a controlled descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 7.3 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 21°C and a gentle headwind of 6 kt at 130°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 2 kt.
The total landing distance of 1,147 meters was 65% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's weight and the runway's length. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 8.4 meters, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was executed with good control, and the aircraft landed safely on the runway. However, there were some minor deviations in the aircraft's alignment and speed, which may have been due to various factors such as wind, aircraft performance, or pilot technique.
