Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 7,350 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 7,350 ft of the 11,795 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,600 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Concorde took off from runway 24L at UUEE Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow, Russia. The departure roll was smooth, and the aircraft lifted off the ground at a speed of 211 knots. The takeoff distance covered 6,491 feet, which was 54% of the runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 34°F, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 234°.
As the Concorde climbed out of Moscow, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile southwest of the airport. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,350 feet above sea level to 51,661 feet, an increase of 50,311 feet in just 33 minutes. This climb phase covered a distance of 431 nautical miles. The Concorde then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted 43 minutes and covered 844 nautical miles. This phase started 12 miles southwest of UFRO Frolovo Airport in Frolovo, Russia.
The Concorde continued its journey, entering another climb phase 12 miles southwest of Tonekabon in Iran. This climb phase was relatively short, lasting only 2 minutes, and covered a distance of 40 nautical miles. The aircraft climbed from 55,665 feet to 56,275 feet, an increase of 611 feet. The Concorde then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted 2 minutes and covered 40 nautical miles. This phase started 11 miles northeast of Karaj in Iran.
The Concorde continued its climb, entering another phase 7 miles southwest of Qarchak in Iran. This climb phase lasted 2 minutes and covered a distance of 40 nautical miles. The aircraft climbed from 56,866 feet to 57,511 feet, an increase of 645 feet. The Concorde then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted 20 minutes and covered 400 nautical miles. This phase started 38 miles south of Pishva in Iran.
As the Concorde approached its destination, it began its descent phase, which started 27 miles south of OISD Darab Airport in Bargan, Iran. The aircraft descended from 59,019 feet to 1,239 feet, a decrease of 57,780 feet in 27 minutes. This descent phase covered a distance of 189 nautical miles.
The Concorde then began its final approach to runway 12R at OMDB Dubai International Airport. The aircraft was heading 118.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,197 feet above ground level. The landing was smooth, with the touchdown point being 1,269 feet beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was slightly fast at 159 knots, but the touchdown rate was good at -178 feet per minute.
The Concorde landed on runway 12R, which was 11,795 feet long. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 34 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 59°F, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 180°. The crosswind was 3 knots, and the headwind was 2 knots.
After landing, the Concorde taxied to the parking area, taking less than 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,992 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 137 minutes. The Concorde used 86,920 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Concorde's landing at Dubai International Airport (OMDB) was a complex operation that required precise execution. The aircraft began its final approach to runway 12R from the north-west, heading 118.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,197 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was conducted in a relatively calm environment, with a temperature of 59°F and a gentle wind of 4 knots at 180°.
Upon touchdown, the Concorde's threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 170 knots, which is a good indication of the pilot's control over the aircraft's descent. However, the touchdown point was 1,269 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed of 159 knots was a little faster than desired. The touchdown rate of -178 feet per minute (fpm) was still within acceptable limits, indicating that the aircraft's descent was controlled and smooth.
One of the notable aspects of this landing was the runway touchdown position, which was misaligned by 34 feet from the centreline. This suggests that the pilot may have experienced some difficulty in aligning the aircraft with the runway during the final approach. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 32 feet from the centreline, which may have been a result of the pilot's efforts to correct the initial misalignment.
The total landing distance of 7,119 feet was 60% of the runway length, which is a relatively normal distance for a Concorde landing. The crosswind component was minimal, with a speed of 3 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. Overall, the landing was a complex operation that required precise execution, and while there were some minor deviations from the desired parameters, the pilot's control over the aircraft was evident throughout the descent and touchdown.
