Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,096 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 534 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Miami International Airport (KMIA), the Boeing 787-8 initiated its takeoff roll on runway 08R, covering 2,156 meters, which represented 67% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 130 knots, overcoming the local weather conditions of a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius. Following a 13-minute taxiing period from the parking to the runway, the aircraft had successfully departed the ground.
As the aircraft climbed to its enroute level, it began its ascent from 575 feet above sea level to 40,994 feet, a vertical increase of 40,420 feet, in 21 minutes and covering 152 nautical miles. The climb phase concluded 1 mile south of Brownsville, Florida. The aircraft then entered a 67-minute cruise phase, covering 550 nautical miles, before initiating its descent 2 miles west of Samaná El Catey International Airport (MDCY) in the Dominican Republic. The descent phase saw the aircraft decrease its altitude from 40,993 feet to 5,236 feet in 23 minutes and covering 140 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a brief level cruise phase, lasting 2 minutes, before commencing its final descent 2 miles southwest of Baigua Airport (MDBG) in the Dominican Republic.
The Boeing 787-8 completed its final approach to runway 08 at Punta Cana International Airport (MDPC), aligning with the runway from the west at a heading of 74.0 degrees. The aircraft landed on the runway, with a touchdown point 239 meters beyond the touchdown zone, at a speed of 126 knots and a touchdown rate of -199 feet per minute. The total landing distance was 1,191 meters, representing 38% of the runway length. Following a 5-minute taxiing period from the runway to the parking, the aircraft had completed its journey, covering a total distance of 873 nautical miles and consuming 8,655 kilograms of fuel in the process, which took a total of 137 minutes.
The Boeing 787-8 touched down on runway 08 at MDPC Punta Cana International Airport, marking a successful conclusion to the approach phase. The aircraft's descent was well-managed, with a good threshold height achieved, allowing for a smooth transition to the touchdown phase. The threshold speed of 132 kt was also within acceptable limits, indicating a well-executed approach.
As the aircraft made contact with the runway, the touchdown speed of 126 kt was recorded, which was within the desired range. The touchdown rate of -199 fpm was also satisfactory, demonstrating a controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 10.2 m, which may have been due to crosswind or pilot error. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 30 °C and a headwind of 14 kt, may have also played a role in the slight deviation.
The total landing distance of 1,191 m, which accounted for 38% of the runway length, was within acceptable limits. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centreline by 9.1 m, which may have been a result of the aircraft's initial touchdown position. Despite these minor deviations, the overall performance of the aircraft was satisfactory, earning a score of 94.7%.
