Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,278 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,278 m of the 4,087 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 712 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
A Boeing 777-300 departed from London Heathrow Airport's runway 09R, navigating through a local weather scenario characterized by a temperature of 26 °C, wind at 13 kt from 139 °, and a crosswind of 10 kt and headwind of 8 kt. The aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 189 kt, covering 2,060 m of the 3,300 m runway in the process. Following a 14-minute climb from 1,077 ft to 31,995 ft, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, maintaining an altitude of 31,995 ft for 43 minutes while covering 1,305 nm.
The flight continued with multiple enroute climb and level cruise phases, with notable increases in altitude and decreases in time. Notably, the aircraft climbed from 32,212 ft to 34,058 ft in 2 minutes, covering 57 nm, and then entered a level cruise phase lasting 40 minutes, covering 1,322 nm. The flight also experienced a descent phase from 35,986 ft to 24,107 ft in 5 minutes, covering 49 nm. Following a series of level cruise and descent phases, the aircraft began its final approach to runway 36L at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, navigating through a local weather scenario characterized by a temperature of 29 °C, wind at 7 kt from 80 °, and a crosswind of 7 kt and headwind of 1 kt.
The Boeing 777-300 landed on runway 36L, with a touchdown point 292 m beyond the touchdown zone. The aircraft's touchdown speed was slightly above target at 145 kt, while the touchdown rate was fair at -258 fpm. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was very good. Following a 2-minute taxiing period, the aircraft arrived at the parking area, having completed a total flight distance of 4,413 nm in 184 minutes and consuming 73,210 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 777-300 touched down on runway 36L at KDFW Dallas Fort Worth International Airport with a score of 90.8%. The aircraft was approaching from the south, heading 0.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,280 feet above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a threshold height of 62 feet above ground level, slightly above the target. The threshold speed of 150 knots was also slightly above the target, indicating a slight delay in the flare.
The touchdown point was 292 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 145 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate of -258 feet per minute was fair, indicating a controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft centered on the runway. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 29°C and a wind of 7 knots at 80°, resulting in a 7-knot crosswind and a 1-knot headwind.
The total landing distance of 2,194 meters was 54% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, with the aircraft maintaining its centerline alignment throughout the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was satisfactory, with some minor deviations from the target parameters.
