Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The rest of the report
Departing from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (TJSJ) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Boeing 737-MAX8 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. As the aircraft lined up on runway 08, it was cleared for departure, and the takeoff roll commenced. The aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 162 knots, lifting off the ground after a distance of 5,148 feet, which represented 54% of the available runway length.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started approximately 1 mile northeast of TJSJ. The climb phase saw the aircraft ascend from an initial altitude of 992 feet above sea level to a cruising altitude of 19,175 feet, an increase of 18,182 feet in just 6 minutes, covering a distance of 31 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase followed, during which the aircraft maintained a steady altitude for 18 minutes, covering a distance of 111 nautical miles. The descent phase began approximately 7 miles south of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and saw the aircraft descend from 19,998 feet to 1,968 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 78 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 35 at Las Américas International Airport (MDSD) was initiated from the south, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 341.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,136 feet above ground level.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 touched down on runway 35 at MDSD, with a touchdown distance of 1,352 feet, representing 36% of the available runway length. The touchdown speed was slightly higher than desired at 142 knots, but the runway touchdown position was only slightly misaligned from the centerline. The aircraft's rollout alignment was very good, and it taxied to the parking area in just 1 minute, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 240 nautical miles, and the aircraft used 4,308 pounds of fuel during the 53-minute flight.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 touched down on runway 35 at MDSD Las Américas International Airport with a good threshold height, allowing the crew to maintain a stable approach. The threshold speed of 149 kt was within the acceptable range, indicating a well-executed approach. As the aircraft made contact with the runway, the touchdown distance of 1,352 ft was satisfactory, but the touchdown speed of 142 kt was slightly above the optimal range, resulting in a firm touchdown rate of -310 fpm.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 13 ft from the centreline, which may have been due to the 3 kt crosswind component. However, the local weather conditions, with a temperature of 73 °F and a light wind of 4 kt at 20 °, were generally favorable for landing. The total landing distance of 3,972 ft, which accounted for 36% of the runway length, was within the acceptable range.
The rollout phase was executed smoothly, with the aircraft maintaining a very good alignment with the centreline. Overall, the landing was considered satisfactory, with a score of 98.9%. While there were some minor deviations from the optimal performance, the crew's skills and the aircraft's capabilities ensured a safe and efficient landing.
