Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,395 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,395 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 471 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Extra 330, then departed from runway 27 at LFKO Propriano Airport in Propriano, Corse, France. The takeoff distance was 250 meters, which accounted for 18% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 71 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots at 189 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was negligible. The enroute climb began overhead the airport, with the aircraft ascending from 580 feet above sea level to 530 feet, an increase of 50 feet in 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile.
The final approach to runway 09 at LFKO Propriano Airport was made from the east, heading 182.0 degrees at an altitude of 407 feet above ground level and 0 nautical miles from the runway. However, the pilot decided to execute a go-around at an altitude of 1,180 feet above ground level. Another go-around was performed at 982 feet above ground level.
After the second go-around, the aircraft successfully landed on runway 09, which had a length of 1,395 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was excessively high at 208 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 142 meters, and the touchdown speed was 52 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was perfect at -42 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions during the landing were similar to those encountered during takeoff, with a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots at 191 degrees. The crosswind was 4 knots, while the headwind was negligible. The total landing distance was 584 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also very good.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 3 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 13 minutes. The aircraft used 13 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The aircraft in question, an Extra 330, successfully landed at LFKO Propriano Airport on runway 09. The approach was initiated from the east, heading 182.0° at an altitude of 407 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft's final approach was characterized by a good threshold height, which is a crucial factor in ensuring a safe landing.
However, the threshold speed was excessively high in all three instances of landing. The first instance recorded a speed of 205 knots, while the second and third instances recorded speeds of 165 and 208 knots, respectively. This excessive speed may have been due to various factors, including pilot error or an overestimation of the aircraft's approach speed.
Despite the high threshold speeds, the touchdown distance was good, measuring 142 meters. The touchdown speed of 52 knots was also within acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of -42 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained a stable and aligned approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 17°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from 191°. The crosswind component was 4 knots, while the headwind component was negligible. These conditions likely contributed to the successful landing.
The total landing distance of 584 meters was 42% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, with good threshold height, touchdown distance, and touchdown speed. However, the excessively high threshold speeds and slightly long landing distance are areas for improvement.
