Departure
Rotate as soon as the speed tape reaches the rotation target, easing back pressure smoothly without delay.
What happened: The aircraft lifted off above the rotation target speed, rotating later than planned.
Watch for: Airspeed indicator against the rotation target speed.

Arrival
Reduce power earlier on final to bleed speed back to 47 kt before crossing the threshold.
What happened: You crossed the threshold at 54 kt, 7 kt above the 47 kt target.
Watch for: Airspeed, targeting 47 kt at the threshold.

A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,937 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 650 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Savage Cub departed from runway 36 at KOSH Wittman Regional Airport, achieving a takeoff distance of 1,899 ft (24 % of the runway) and lifting off at 53 kt. Ambient conditions were 70 °F with a wind of 3 kt from 300°, including a 3 kt cross-wind component and a 2 kt head-wind.
The initial climb began overhead KOSH, climbing from 1,028 ft asl to 1,535 ft asl, a gain of 507 ft in 2 minutes while covering 2 nm.
A level cruise commenced 1 nm south of KOSH and lasted 2 minutes, during which the aircraft covered 1 nm.
The next climb segment started 2 nm north-west of Van Dyne, rising from 1,926 ft asl to 3,043 ft asl, an increase of 1,118 ft over 3 minutes and 3 nm of distance.
A subsequent cruise phase over Van Dyne lasted 2 minutes and spanned 2 nm.
The following climb began 1 nm south of Van Dyne, climbing from 3,303 ft asl to 4,502 ft asl, a gain of 1,200 ft in 3 minutes while covering 4 nm.
A cruise segment over North Fond du Lac lasted 2 minutes and covered 2 nm.
Descent commenced overhead KFLD Fond du Lac County Airport, descending from 4,234 ft asl to 1,225 ft asl, a loss of 3,008 ft in 2 minutes across 2 nm.
A brief level cruise followed 1 nm south of KFLD, lasting 2 minutes and covering 1 nm.
Final approach to runway 36 at KFLD was executed from the south on a heading of 358.0°, at 0 nm distance and 328 ft agl.
Landing on runway 36 at KFLD, whose length is 5,937 ft, featured a threshold speed of 54 kt and a touchdown distance of 643 ft. The aircraft touched down at 38 kt with a smooth rate of -102 fpm, offset 17 ft from the centreline. Local temperature was 72 °F, and the total landing distance recorded was 980 ft (17 % of the runway).
Runway rollout alignment was reported as very good.
In total, the flight covered 18 nm, took 181 (units as given), and consumed 0 lbs of fuel.
The aircraft entered the final approach to runway 36 at KFLD Fond du Lac County Airport from the south, maintaining a heading of 358.0° at the final fix located 0 NM from the threshold and 328 ft above ground level. Local temperature was 72 °F.
The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was too high at 54 kt.
Touchdown occurred 643 ft from the runway threshold, a distance described as good, with a touchdown speed of 38 kt that was a little fast. The vertical rate at touchdown was smooth at minus 102 fpm, and the touchdown point was slightly misaligned by 17 ft from the centreline. Total landing distance measured 980 ft, representing 17 % of the available runway.
Runway 36 is 5,937 ft long; rollout alignment was very good.
Reduce the approach speed to bring the threshold speed within the target range, which will also lower the touchdown speed. Fine-tune the flare to maintain alignment and further improve touchdown precision.
