Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,833 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 291 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a short taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, taking approximately 1 minute and covering less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-600, then departed from runway 23 at EGNV Teesside International Airport. The takeoff distance was 968 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 146 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 20°C and wind speeds of 6 knots at 189 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 4 knots. The enroute climb started approximately 1 mile southwest of EGNV Teesside International Airport, with the aircraft ascending from 1,108 feet above sea level to 38,541 feet above sea level. This climb, which covered 290 nautical miles, took 42 minutes and resulted in an increase of 37,433 feet.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began overhead Borgerhout in Flanders, Belgium. This phase lasted for 54 minutes and covered 952 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, which started 39 miles southwest of Giannades in the Ionian Islands, Greece. The descent from 38,561 feet above sea level to 1,341 feet above sea level took 18 minutes and covered 119 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 34 at LGZA Zakynthos International Airport Dionysios Solomos was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 345.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,309 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 34 was successful, with the touchdown distance being 294 meters. The touchdown speed was slightly above the target at 136 knots, while the touchdown rate was fair at -219 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 30°C and wind speeds of 4 knots at 20 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 820 meters, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. After landing, the aircraft took 1 minute to taxi to the parking area, covering less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,367 nautical miles, which was covered in 2 hours and 0 minutes. The aircraft used 8,032 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-600 aircraft successfully landed at LGZA Zakynthos International Airport Dionysios Solomos, achieving a high score of 99.7%. The final approach to runway 34 was conducted from the south, with the aircraft heading 345.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,309 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 128 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown distance of 294 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast, which may have been due to the aircraft's approach speed being slightly above target.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 30°C and a gentle wind of 4 knots at 20°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots, which helped to reduce the aircraft's ground speed and make the landing more stable.
The total landing distance of 820 meters was 45% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered good, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating a high level of proficiency in terms of approach and landing technique.
