Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 305 m and 152 m above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,299 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 523 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 24 at Edinburgh Airport (EGPH), with a takeoff distance of 1,357 meters, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 164 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions of 8°C temperature and a wind speed of 6 knots at 232 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 6 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Newbridge, a city in Scotland, where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 348 meters above sea level to 11,217 meters above sea level, an increase of 10,868.7 meters in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 109 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 41 miles east of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in Northumberland, England, and lasted for 38 minutes, covering a distance of 315 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 3 miles west of Filskov in Denmark, where it descended from 11,280 meters above sea level to 8,840 meters above sea level, a decrease of 2,439.6 meters in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 40 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 1 mile south of Odder in Denmark and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 26 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 6 miles southwest of Sejeroe Gniben in Denmark, where it descended from 8,761 meters above sea level to 915 meters above sea level, a decrease of 7,846.2 meters in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 68 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again 1 mile west of Hofterup in Sweden and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 2 miles southwest of Barsebaeckshamn in Sweden, where it descended from 888 meters above sea level to 409 meters above sea level, a decrease of 479.3 meters in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 22L at Copenhagen Kastrup Airport (EKCH) was made from the northeast, heading 221.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 402.6 meters above ground level. The landing was made on runway 22L, which had a length of 3,299 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 134 knots.
The touchdown point was 101 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 129 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was excellent at -0.3 meters per second. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.0 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 9°C temperature and a wind speed of 5 knots at 188 degrees, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,011 meters, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took approximately 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 574 nautical miles, taking 95 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,710 kilograms of fuel.
The aircraft, identified as an A21N, successfully landed at EKCH Copenhagen Kastrup Airport on runway 22L. The final approach was initiated from the north east, heading 221.0° at an altitude of 402.6 meters above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 134 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 101 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 129 knots. This speed was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown rate was particularly impressive, with an excellent rate of -0.3 meters per second. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.0 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 9°C, with a wind speed of 5 knots from a direction of 188°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions contributed to a relatively smooth landing.
The total landing distance was 1,011 meters, which accounted for approximately 31% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating a well-executed approach and landing. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, suggesting that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively to bring the aircraft to a stop.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and coming to a stop in a controlled manner. The slight misalignment of the touchdown position was the only notable deviation from an ideal landing.
