Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,716 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 318 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 17R at the Orlando International Airport, also known as KMCO. The takeoff distance was 21 meters, which is 1% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 174 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 17 knots at a direction of 69 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 16 knots and a tailwind of 6 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 3 miles west of Lake Hart in Florida. The climb took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 114 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 597 feet above sea level to 37,780 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,182 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles west of Mangonia Park in Florida. This phase lasted for 116 minutes and covered a distance of 904 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting at a latitude of 14.0430766 and a longitude of -71.4708238. The descent took 24 minutes and covered a distance of 122 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 38,441 feet above sea level to 1,297 feet above sea level, a decrease of 37,144 feet.
The final approach to runway 11 at the Queen Beatrix International Airport in Aruba was made from the west, with a heading of 104.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,238 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 11, which has a length of 2,716 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed at 137 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 321 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 134 knots. The touchdown rate was hard at -424 feet per minute, but the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as at the time of departure, with a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 17 knots at a direction of 69 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 10 knots and a headwind of 15 knots. The total landing distance was 1,099 meters, which is 40% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,149 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 168 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 6,619 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at TNCA Queen Beatrix International Airport, achieving a score of 96.3%. The final approach to runway 11 was conducted from the west, with a heading of 104.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,238 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 137 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 321 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 134 knots was a little fast, which may have contributed to the hard touchdown rate of -424 feet per minute.
Despite the slightly fast touchdown speed, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 31°C, with a wind speed of 17 knots at 69°. The crosswind component was 10 knots, while the headwind component was 15 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,099 meters was 40% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score of 96.3%. However, there were some minor issues with the touchdown speed and rate, which may be addressed in future training exercises to improve the pilot's performance.
