Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,441 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 357 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Cessna C172, then departed from runway 07 at the ETNS Schleswig Air Base. The takeoff distance was 656 meters, which accounted for 27% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 77 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of -7°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 230°. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the tailwind component was 5 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb overhead the town of Selk in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. During this climb, the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 829 feet above sea level to 989 feet, an increase of 160 feet, in less than 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 17 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. This cruise phase was also initiated overhead Selk. Later, the aircraft entered another level cruise phase, this time starting 1 mile north of the town of Klein Rheide, and lasted for 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
As the aircraft approached the ETNS Schleswig Air Base, it began its final approach to runway 07 from the west, heading at an angle of 74.0° at an altitude of 224 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 07, which had a length of 2,441 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed at 52 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 354 meters, and the touchdown speed was 44 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -122 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 7.5 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at takeoff, with a temperature of -7°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 221°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the tailwind component was 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,355 meters, which accounted for 56% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 9 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 29 minutes. The aircraft used 9 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at ETNS Schleswig Air Base, achieving a score of 97.4%. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 74.0° at 0 nm and 224 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 07, which has a length of 2,441 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was slightly below the target at 52 knots. The touchdown distance was good, measuring 354 meters, and the touchdown speed was also within acceptable limits at 44 knots. The touchdown rate was smooth, with a descent rate of -122 feet per minute (fpm).
However, there was a slight deviation in the runway touchdown position, with the aircraft landing 7.5 meters off-centerline. This may be attributed to the crosswind and tailwind conditions present during the landing. The local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of -7°C, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 221°. The crosswind component was 3 knots, while the tailwind component was 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,355 meters, which accounts for 56% of the runway length. Despite the slight deviation in touchdown position, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled rollout. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and handling characteristics.
