Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 6,098 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,098 ft of the 10,480 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,321 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT) took approximately 5 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The Airbus A321 then departed from runway 18L, utilizing 63% of the 8,700-foot runway to achieve a takeoff distance of 5,468 feet. Liftoff speed was recorded at 161 knots, with a local temperature of 70°F and a wind of 4 knots at 219°.
The enroute climb commenced approximately 1 mile southeast of KCLT, with the aircraft ascending from 1,683 feet above sea level to 35,908 feet, a vertical increase of 34,225 feet, in 24 minutes and covering 163 nautical miles. Following a 42-minute cruise at a level altitude, the aircraft began its descent approximately 2 miles southeast of 18FA Tropical Plantation Airport, Palm City, Florida. The descent from 36,054 feet to 5,410 feet, a decrease of 30,643 feet, was completed in 16 minutes and covered 95 nautical miles. The aircraft then leveled off for a brief 3-minute cruise, before commencing a final descent. The landing was executed on runway 08R at Miami International Airport (KMIA), with a total landing distance of 5,825 feet, utilizing 56% of the 10,480-foot runway.
The final approach to runway 08R was conducted from the west, with a heading of 87.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,216 feet above ground level. The touchdown point was 948 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 136 knots, slightly above the target speed. The touchdown rate was, however, perfect at -31 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 19 feet from the centerline. Following a 1-minute taxi to the parking area, the aircraft had completed a total flight distance of 616 nautical miles, utilizing 10,306 pounds of fuel in the process.
The final approach to runway 08R at KMIA Miami International Airport was initiated from the west, heading 87.0° at 4 nm and 1,216 ft above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with the threshold height at 55 ft above ground level being slightly above the target. This minor deviation from the ideal approach path did not significantly impact the subsequent phases of the landing.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, the touchdown speed of 136 kt was a little fast, exceeding the target by a small margin. However, the touchdown rate of -31 fpm was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 19 ft from the centreline, which could have been a result of the crosswind component of 1 kt. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was very good, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and stability during the critical phases of the landing.
The total landing distance of 5,825 ft was 56% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. The threshold speed of 150 kt was well above the target, but this was likely a result of the headwind component of 8 kt. Overall, the landing performance was satisfactory, with a score of 94.9%. The minor deviations from the ideal approach and touchdown characteristics did not significantly impact the overall outcome, and the pilot demonstrated good control and stability during the rollout phase.
