Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach that landed joined below the 1,000 ft gate, after a go-around. The gate assessed on the earlier approach is not shown - it was not the landing's.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 428 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 428 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 647 m short of the threshold. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Hamm-Lippewiesen Airfield (EDLH), the Bonanza G36 began its takeoff roll on runway 06. The aircraft accelerated to liftoff speed of 76 kt, achieving liftoff at 398 m, which was 65% of the runway's length. The local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 26 °C, with a wind of 6 kt at 360°, resulting in a 5 kt crosswind and a 3 kt headwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airfield, it transitioned into an enroute climb, reaching an altitude of 2,431 ft asl after a 2-minute climb from 699 ft asl. The climb covered a distance of 6 nm, with a vertical gain of 1,732 ft. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, maintaining an altitude of 2,431 ft asl for 3 minutes while covering 9 nm. The enroute descent phase commenced 1 mile north of Oelde Bergeler Airfield (EDLU), with the aircraft descending from 2,140 ft asl to 293 ft asl in 4 minutes, covering a distance of 10 nm.
The final approach to runway 27L at Gütersloh Air Base (ETUO) was initiated from the east, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 250.0° at 2 nm and 36 ft agl. However, a go-around was executed at 127 ft agl, and the aircraft subsequently touched down before the threshold. The touchdown speed of 72 kt and touchdown rate of -188 fpm were both within acceptable limits. Despite a slightly misaligned touchdown, the aircraft's total landing distance of 387 m, which was 91% of the runway's length, was satisfactory. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, completing the flight with a total distance of 29 nm and a fuel consumption of 8 kg.
The final approach to runway 27L at ETUO Gütersloh Air Base was initiated from the east, heading 250.0° at 2 nm and 36 ft above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a stable and controlled descent. The aircraft touched down before the threshold, indicating a slightly aggressive approach. The touchdown speed of 72 kt was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown rate of -188 fpm was also good, indicating a controlled and smooth touchdown.
However, the runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 170.4 m from the centreline, which may have been due to a combination of factors including crosswind and pilot error. The local weather conditions were relatively calm, with a temperature of 26 °C and a wind of 4 kt at 23°. The crosswind component was 4 kt, and the tailwind component was 2 kt, which may have contributed to the misalignment. Despite this, the total landing distance of 387 m was only 91% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing.
The rollout phase was also marred by excessive misalignment, with the aircraft deviating by 169.2 m from the centreline. This suggests that the pilot may have struggled to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase, possibly due to the crosswind or tailwind conditions. Overall, the landing was scored 53.1%, indicating a below-average performance.
