Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 5,004 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 934 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight took place from KHYA Cape Cod Gateway Airport, where the aircraft, a Piper Aerostar 600, began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the designated runway, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in just 2 minutes.
As the plane prepared for takeoff, it started its departure roll on runway 15. The takeoff distance covered 32% of the runway, and the plane lifted off at a speed of 98 kt. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were pleasant, with a temperature of 71 °F and a gentle wind of 16 kt blowing from 189°. This resulted in a headwind of 10 kt and a crosswind of 12 kt.
After lift-off, the plane entered an enroute climb, ascending from 725 ft above sea level to 4,752 ft in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles. The climb was initiated overhead Hyannis, Massachusetts, marking the beginning of the aircraft's journey.
The enroute level cruise segment followed, with the plane maintaining a steady altitude for 7 minutes as it traveled 23 nautical miles. This phase started 2 miles northwest of Forestdale, Massachusetts, and provided the crew with an opportunity to assess the aircraft's performance and weather conditions.
As the plane approached the midpoint of its journey, it began its enroute descent, starting over Myricks Airport in Berkley, Massachusetts. The descent took the plane from an altitude of 4,482 ft to 529 ft in 8 minutes, covering a distance of 21 nautical miles.
Upon entering the final approach phase, the aircraft aimed for runway 23 at KSFZ North Central State Airport, approaching from the northeast. However, just before touchdown, the crew initiated a go-around, raising the plane to an altitude of 13 ft above ground level.
The landing segment followed shortly after, with the plane touching down on runway 23 at a speed of 71 kt. The touchdown distance was 932 ft, and the plane's speed was well below the target threshold speed of 98 kt. The touchdown rate was an impressive -83 fpm, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
Taxiing to the parking area from the runway took just 1 minute, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total fuel consumption for the flight was 84 lbs, and the total flight distance covered was 59 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 31 minutes.
Summary of the A2A Piper Aerostar 600 NI22PC aircraft landing at North Central State Airport
The aircraft landed successfully on runway 23 at KSFZ North Central State Airport, scoring 98.1% on its final approach and landing. The pilot made a deliberate approach from the northeast, heading 210.0 °, before touching down on the runway with a touchdown distance of 932 feet.
The pilot demonstrated good control throughout the landing, achieving a satisfactory threshold speed of 98 kt, which was slightly above the targeted speed. The aircraft maintained its alignment with the runway centerline, resulting in a very good runway touchdown alignment. The local weather conditions during the landing were calm, with minimal wind impact on the flight. At 72 °F, the temperature favored smooth takeoff and landing operations. The crosswind and headwind were both 6 kt, resulting in little to no interference with the aircraft's descent and touchdown.
The pilot successfully managed the aircraft's descent rate, achieving an excellent negative acceleration of -83 fpm, which contributed to a smooth and controlled touchdown. The aircraft's groundspeed deceleration and landing roll demonstrated perfect alignment, resulting in an ideal runway rollout. This highlights the pilot's expertise and precision skills.
The aircraft was able to utilize 50% of the available runway, touching down at 932 feet and rolling out at 2,525 feet. The runway provided an adequate length of 5,004 feet for a safe landing. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, showcasing the pilot's abilities in handling the aircraft under various weather conditions.
