Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,004 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 2,712 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL), the Airbus A350-900 began its journey on runway 27R. Taxiing to the runway took 14 minutes and covered 3 nautical miles. The aircraft then accelerated down the 10,004-foot runway, lifting off at a speed of 158 knots after a takeoff distance of 4,933 feet, which equated to 42% of the available runway length. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 82°F and a gentle headwind of 1 knot.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb 1 mile south of College Park, Georgia. The climb phase saw the aircraft ascend from 1,960 feet above sea level to 40,996 feet, an increase of 39,035 feet in 28 minutes, covering a distance of 204 nautical miles. Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted 23 minutes and covered a similar distance of 204 nautical miles, 4 miles south of Loyall, Kentucky. The enroute descent phase commenced 2 miles southwest of OH92 Porter Airport Hopewell, Ohio, where the aircraft descended from 41,002 feet to 1,984 feet above sea level, a decrease of 39,018 feet in 35 minutes, covering 191 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (KDTW), it began its final approach to runway 21L from the northeast, heading 209.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,337 feet above ground level. The aircraft touched down 1,326 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 124 knots, slightly above the target speed. The touchdown rate was smooth at -124 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The total landing distance was 4,641 feet, equating to 46% of the available runway length. Following a 10-minute taxi to the parking area, covering 1 nautical mile, the aircraft completed its journey, having traveled a total distance of 609 nautical miles and consuming 22,892 pounds of fuel in the process, which took a total of 108 minutes.
The aircraft touched down on runway 21L at KDTW Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport with a smooth touchdown rate of -124 fpm, slightly above the target speed of 124 kt. The touchdown point was 1,326 ft beyond the touchdown zone, indicating a slightly long touchdown. The threshold speed was also slightly above target at 135 kt, which may have contributed to the slightly long touchdown.
The approach quality was good, with a heading of 209.0° from the north east at 4 nm and 1,337 ft above ground level. The runway length of 10,004 ft provided ample space for the aircraft to stop, with a total landing distance of 4,641 ft, accounting for 46% of the runway. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft centered on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 57°F and wind at 17 kt from 230°, resulted in a 6 kt crosswind and a 16 kt headwind, which the pilot successfully managed.
The rollout phase was also executed well, with the aircraft maintaining very good alignment on the runway. Overall, the landing was considered satisfactory, with a score of 90.8%. The slight deviations from target speed and touchdown point were minor and did not significantly impact the overall performance of the landing.
