Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,655 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 386 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 23 at ZYHB Harbin Taiping International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,617 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 160 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of -3°C, with a wind speed of 9 knots at 190°.
As the aircraft climbed out of Harbin, it began its enroute climb, which started 1 mile southwest of the airport. The climb took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 126 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,502 feet above sea level to 32,365 feet. The enroute climb was followed by a level cruise, which began 5 miles northeast of Shuangyang, China, and lasted for 154 minutes. During this period, the aircraft covered a distance of 1,141 nautical miles.
The enroute cruise was interrupted by a descent, which started 46 miles north of Jiufen, Taiwan. The descent took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 51 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 34,702 feet to 16,267 feet. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which started 14 miles northeast of RCTP Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and lasted for 2 minutes. This was followed by another descent, which started 8 miles north of the airport and took 11 minutes to complete. During this descent, the aircraft covered a distance of 42 nautical miles and descended from 15,693 feet to 1,380 feet.
The final approach to runway 05L at RCTP Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 49.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,289 feet above ground level. The landing was made on the runway, which had a length of 3,655 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 136 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 386 meters, and the touchdown speed was 121 knots. However, the touchdown rate was very hard at -597 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 22°C, with a wind speed of 18 knots at 70°. The crosswind was 6 knots, and the headwind was 16 knots. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 10.2 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 8.5 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 1,261 meters, which accounted for 35% of the runway.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,375 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 211 minutes. The aircraft used 9,164 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at RCTP Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, with a final approach score of 90.7%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the southwest, heading 49.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,289 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was executed on runway 05L, which has a length of 3,655 meters. The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. The threshold speed of 136 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's speed during the final approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's distance from the runway threshold was good at 386 meters, and the touchdown speed of 121 knots was also within the acceptable range. However, the touchdown rate was very hard at -597 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate that the aircraft was touching down with a higher than ideal rate of descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 10.2 meters, which may have been due to factors such as crosswind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 22°C, with a wind speed of 18 knots at 70°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the headwind component was 16 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,261 meters, which is 35% of the runway length. This indicates that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 8.5 meters, which may have been due to factors such as pilot error or the aircraft's braking performance.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor issues with the touchdown rate and runway alignment. The pilot's ability to control the aircraft's speed and distance from the runway threshold was good, but there may be room for improvement in terms of touchdown rate and runway alignment.
