Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,352 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 726 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737-700 taxied from the parking area to the departure runway at Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (YSSY). The taxi-out required 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nm.
The aircraft commenced its departure roll on runway 16R. Takeoff was achieved after a ground run of 1,607 m, representing 41 % of the runway, and liftoff occurred at 141 kt. Ambient conditions were 15 °C with a wind from 185° at 10 kt, including a 3 kt cross-wind component and a 10 kt head-wind component.
Climb began over Kyeemagh, New South Wales, with the airplane ascending from 990 ft asl to 39,994 ft asl, a gain of 39,004 ft achieved in 45 minutes while covering 341 nm.
Level cruise was established 24 miles north-east of Brewarrina, New South Wales, and was maintained for 179 minutes, during which 1,286 nm were flown.
Descent commenced 9 miles north-east of Pine Creek Airport (YPNC) in the Northern Territory, with the aircraft descending from 39,773 ft asl to 1,383 ft asl, a loss of 38,390 ft in 16 minutes over a distance of 99 nm.
The final approach to runway 29 at Darwin International Airport (YPDN) was flown from the east on a heading of 289.0° at 4 nm and 1,283 ft agl. During the approach the aircraft reduced altitude from 1,324 ft agl to 56 ft agl in 100 seconds and met the stabilisation-gate criteria.
Touchdown on runway 29 occurred with a threshold speed of 131 kt and a touchdown speed of 116 kt. The threshold height was reported as good. The aircraft contacted the runway 306 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a vertical speed of minus 211 fpm. Runway touchdown alignment was perfect. Runway length is 3,352 m; the landing distance recorded was 1,187 m, representing 35 % of the runway. Local temperature was 25 °C.
Rollout alignment was perfect and the aircraft remained on the centreline throughout the deceleration phase.
After landing, the airplane taxied from the runway to the parking area in 1 minute, covering less than 1 nm.
In total the flight covered 1,736 nm, required 245 minutes of airborne time, and consumed 10,046 kg of fuel.
The final approach to runway 29 at YPDN Darwin International Airport was conducted from the east on a heading of 289.0° at 4 nm and 1,283 ft agl. At the 1,000 ft gate the approach was assessed as stabilised, with gear, flaps, sink rate, glideslope, centreline and speed all within limits.
During the threshold and flare phase the aircraft descended from 1,324 ft agl to 56 ft agl in 100 seconds, achieving a good threshold height and a good threshold speed of 131 kt.
Touchdown occurred 306 m beyond the touchdown zone with a good touchdown speed of 116 kt. The vertical speed at touchdown was fair at minus 211 fpm and runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
Rollout used a total landing distance of 1,187 m, representing 35 % of the 3,352 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was perfect. Local temperature was 25 °C.
Refine flare timing to achieve a lower vertical speed at touchdown and aim to place the main-gear contact point nearer the 300 m aim point to further improve the landing profile.
