Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,956 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,956 m of the 3,112 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 724 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 23L at RCTP Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. The Boeing 777-200ER took off with a takeoff distance of 1,369 meters, which was 41% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 169 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 34 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 230 degrees. The crosswind was negligible, but there was a headwind of 8 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started its enroute climb 1 mile west of RCGM Taoyuan Air Base Taoyuan. The climb was from an altitude of 1,097 feet above sea level to 41,650 feet above sea level, an increase of 40,553 feet in just 9 minutes. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 134 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started 7 miles northwest of RCWA Wang'an Airport Wang'an and lasted for 7 minutes, covering a distance of 170 nautical miles.
The enroute descent began 43 miles southeast of Jiazi, China, and lasted for 27 minutes. The aircraft descended from an altitude of 41,746 feet above sea level to 176 feet above sea level, a decrease of 41,571 feet. During this time, the aircraft covered a distance of 131 nautical miles. The landing took place on runway 13 at VHHX Hong Kong International Airport Kai Tak, which had a runway length of 3,112 meters.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 29 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 11 knots from a direction of 190 degrees. The crosswind was 9 knots, while the headwind was 6 knots. The touchdown point was 399 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 139 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was heavy at -629 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was significantly misaligned by 27.3 meters from the centerline.
The total landing distance was 1,966 meters, which was 63% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 27.3 meters from the centerline. After landing, the aircraft took 8 minutes to taxi to the parking area from the runway, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 440 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 58 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 8,467 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-200ER aircraft has successfully landed on runway 13 at VHHX Hong Kong International Airport Kai Tak, but the landing performance was not ideal. The aircraft scored 61.7%, indicating room for improvement. The threshold height at 126 ft above ground level (agl) was significantly higher than the target, which may have been due to the aircraft's initial approach path.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was 139 kt, which was slightly above the target speed. This may have contributed to the heavy touchdown rate of -629 fpm, indicating a rapid descent upon touchdown. The touchdown point was 399 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, which suggests that the aircraft may have landed slightly longer than intended.
The runway touchdown position was also significantly misaligned by 27.3 m from the centreline, which may have been due to the aircraft's approach path or the pilot's control inputs during the landing. This misalignment was also evident during the runway rollout, where the aircraft remained off-centreline by 27.3 m.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 29 °C and wind speeds of 11 kt at 190°. The crosswind component was 9 kt, while the headwind component was 6 kt. These conditions were not particularly challenging, and the aircraft's performance may have been affected by other factors such as the pilot's experience and the aircraft's configuration.
Overall, the landing performance of the Boeing 777-200ER at VHHX Hong Kong International Airport Kai Tak was satisfactory, but there is room for improvement in terms of threshold height, touchdown speed, and runway alignment.
