Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,662 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,662 m of the 3,158 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 587 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a British Aerospace 146-200, then departed from runway 06 at KSBD San Bernardino International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,822 meters, which was 60% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 139 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 9 knots at 260 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 9 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile south of Highland, California. The climb took 12 minutes and covered a distance of 51 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 2,007 feet above sea level to 17,868 feet above sea level, an increase of 15,861 feet.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 5 miles southwest of Twentynine Palms, California. This phase lasted for 33 minutes and covered a distance of 215 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 16 miles west of Grand Canyon Village, Arizona. The descent took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 20 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 17,918 feet above sea level to 8,915 feet above sea level, a decrease of 9,003 feet.
The aircraft then began another climb, starting 5 miles south of KGRM Devil's Track Airport in Grand Marias, Arizona. The climb took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 23 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 8,902 feet above sea level to 15,848 feet above sea level, an increase of 6,946 feet. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 3 miles north of KGRY Grand Canyon Village Airport in Grand Canyon Village, Arizona. This phase lasted for 25 minutes and covered a distance of 142 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 7 miles east of AZ25 Tri-Rotor Ag Services Airport in Somerton, Arizona. The descent took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 21 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 15,887 feet above sea level to 2,883 feet above sea level, a decrease of 13,004 feet. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 30L at KIWA Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, approaching from the southeast at a heading of 315.0 degrees.
The landing was made on runway 30L, which had a length of 3,158 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed at 135 knots. The touchdown point was 174 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 123 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was good at -166 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 140 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a tailwind of 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,584 meters, which was 50% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 481 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 104 minutes. The aircraft used 3,567 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The British Aerospace 146-200 aircraft successfully landed at KIWA Phoenix–Mesa Gateway Airport, achieving a score of 98.4%. The final approach to runway 30L was initiated from the south east, heading 315.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,519 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being satisfactory. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 135 knots. The touchdown point was located 174 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 123 knots was a bit faster than desired, but the touchdown rate of -166 feet per minute was considered good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 35°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 140°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component but a slight tailwind of 4 knots. The runway length of 3,158 meters was sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance, which was 1,584 meters, or 50% of the runway.
The runway rollout alignment was reported to be perfect, indicating that the aircraft maintained its alignment with the runway during the rollout phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and handling characteristics.
