Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,296 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,248 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 14 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 15L at KIAH George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport. The takeoff distance was 4,566 feet, which was 38% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 64°F and winds of 6 knots at 209°. The crosswind was 5 knots, and the headwind was 3 knots. After departing from the airport, the enroute climb started 1 mile south of KIAH George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport and continued for 16 minutes, covering a distance of 91 nautical miles. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,148 feet above sea level to 36,147 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,000 feet.
Following the climb, the enroute level cruise started 4 miles east of Jewett, Texas, and lasted for 42 minutes, covering a distance of 304 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 6 miles west of Perry, Oklahoma, and descended from 35,695 feet above sea level to 2,511 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,184 feet, in 20 minutes and covering a distance of 75 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 01R at KICT Wichita Eisenhower National Airport was made from the south, heading 20.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,172 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 01R, which had a length of 7,296 feet. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 52°F and winds of 19 knots at 189°. The crosswind was 3 knots, and the tailwind was 18 knots.
The touchdown speed was a little fast at 127 knots, and the touchdown rate was hard at -413 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 4,584 feet, which was 63% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 480 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 95 minutes. The aircraft used 7,662 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at KICT Wichita Eisenhower National Airport, achieving a score of 98.0%. The final approach to runway 01R was conducted from the south, with a heading of 20.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,172 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The threshold speed of 131 knots was also within the acceptable range, demonstrating the pilot's ability to manage the aircraft's speed during the landing phase. However, the touchdown speed of 127 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have contributed to a harder touchdown rate.
The touchdown rate of -413 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or jolt upon touchdown. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 52°F and a wind speed of 19 knots from a direction of 189°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, while the tailwind component was 18 knots. These conditions may have contributed to the slightly faster touchdown speed and harder touchdown rate.
The total landing distance of 4,584 feet was 63% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score of 98.0%. However, the slightly faster touchdown speed and harder touchdown rate may indicate areas for improvement in the pilot's landing technique.
