Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,244 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,244 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 850 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 23 at EHLE Lelystad Airport, a small airport located in the Netherlands. The DA40-XLS aircraft accelerated down the runway, covering a distance of 420 meters, which is approximately 34% of the runway's total length. The liftoff speed was achieved at 66 knots, marking the beginning of the takeoff phase.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 265 degrees. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots. The aircraft climbed from an initial altitude of 39 feet above sea level to 61 feet, an increase of 22 feet over a distance of less than 1 nautical mile, within a minute.
The enroute climb phase was followed by a final approach to runway 23 at EHLE Lelystad Airport, which was initiated from a heading of 237.0 degrees and an altitude of 71 feet above ground level. The aircraft was at a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway threshold.
The landing phase was notable for a threshold speed that was excessively high at 98 knots. The touchdown point was located very far down the runway, using more than 50% of the available runway length. However, the touchdown speed of 61 knots was good, and the touchdown rate of -10 feet per minute was perfect. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 6.5 meters.
The total landing distance was 1,107 meters, which is approximately 89% of the runway's total length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned from the centerline by 8.5 meters. The local weather conditions during the landing phase were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 3 knots from a direction of 228 degrees, with a crosswind component of 0 knots and a headwind component of 3 knots.
The flight was completed with a total distance of 2 nautical miles, which was covered in 2 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 40 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The DA40-XLS aircraft successfully landed on runway 23 at EHLE Lelystad Airport, but with some areas for improvement. The final approach was initiated from the north east, heading 237.0° at 0 nm and 71 ft above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was quite far down the runway, using more than 50% of the available 1,244 m runway length.
The threshold speed was excessively high at 98 kt, which is a concern as it may indicate a loss of control or a failure to properly configure the aircraft for landing. However, the touchdown speed of 61 kt was good, and the touchdown rate of -10 fpm was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 20 °C and a gentle headwind of 3 kt at 228°.
Despite the good weather conditions, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.5 m from the centreline, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 8.5 m from the centreline. This may indicate a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the landing roll. The total landing distance was 1,107 m, which is 89% of the available runway length.
Overall, while the landing was successful, there are some areas for improvement, particularly with regards to the threshold speed and the alignment of the aircraft during the landing roll. With some adjustments to the pilot's technique and a focus on maintaining a more precise alignment, the DA40-XLS can achieve a more efficient and controlled landing.
