Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 6,989 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,498 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 29 at KTRK Truckee Tahoe Airport, where the aircraft, a Piper PA28-236 Dakota with the registration N1303W, took off into the local weather conditions. The temperature was a warm 84 °F, and the wind was blowing at 12 kt from a direction of 269 °, resulting in a 6 kt crosswind and an 11 kt headwind.
As the aircraft lifted off the ground, it reached a liftoff speed of 72 kt, and it began its enroute climb. The climb started overhead the airport, where the aircraft was initially at an altitude of 6,307 ft above sea level. Over the course of 1 minute, the aircraft climbed to an altitude of 6,994 ft, an increase of 687 ft, and covered a distance of 2 nm.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nm. The cruise phase took place 1 mile south east of Truckee, California, and marked a brief period of steady flight before the aircraft began its final approach to runway 29 at KTRK Truckee Tahoe Airport.
The final approach was made from the south east, with the aircraft heading 300.0 ° and at an altitude of 536 ft above ground level. The approach was made at a distance of 1 nm from the runway threshold, and the aircraft touched down on the runway with a touchdown speed of 60 kt. The touchdown distance was 1,497 ft, which was considered good, and the touchdown rate was an excellent -58 fpm.
The landing was completed on runway 29, which had a length of 6,989 ft. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 17 ft, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 83 °F and a wind blowing at 20 kt from a direction of 270 °, resulting in a 10 kt crosswind and an 18 kt headwind.
Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 1 minute and covering a distance of less than 1 nm. The total flight distance was 6 nm, and the flight used 4 lbs of fuel.
The Piper PA28-236 Dakota aircraft, N1303W, successfully landed at KTRK Truckee Tahoe Airport, achieving a high score of 97.9%. The final approach was conducted from the south east, heading 300.0° at 1 nautical mile and 536 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 29, which has a length of 6,989 feet.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 71 knots. Despite this, the touchdown distance was good at 1,497 feet, and the touchdown speed of 60 knots was also within acceptable limits. The touchdown rate of -58 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, demonstrating a smooth and controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 83°F and a wind speed of 20 knots from 270°. This resulted in a crosswind of 10 knots and a headwind of 18 knots. The aircraft's ability to handle these conditions was not significantly impacted, as the landing distance of 1,983 feet was only 28% of the runway length.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 17 feet from the centerline, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. This suggests that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase, ensuring a safe and stable exit from the runway. Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft's performance was satisfactory given the conditions.
