Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,490 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 1,490 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 404 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question was operated by a Beechcraft King Air 350 aircraft. The journey began with taxiing from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft then departed from runway 25 at ZWWW Ürümqi Diwopu International Airport, taking off with a liftoff speed of 132 knots.
The initial takeoff distance was 1,046 meters, which accounted for 29% of the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 0°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 290°. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots.
Following takeoff, the aircraft entered a level cruise at an altitude of 3,222 feet above sea level (asl), which lasted for 6 minutes and covered 18 nautical miles. The enroute climb phase began 11 miles north of Changji, where the aircraft ascended from 3,222 ft asl to 5,699 ft asl, an increase of 2,477 feet in 2 minutes and covering 5 nautical miles.
The flight then underwent a series of enroute climbs and descents, with the aircraft reaching a maximum altitude of 14,215 ft asl. The level cruise phase resumed at various points, with the aircraft maintaining a steady altitude for extended periods. Notably, the enroute level cruise that lasted 82 minutes covered 141 nautical miles.
As the flight progressed, the aircraft encountered various weather conditions, including temperature fluctuations and wind changes. The local weather at the final destination, UASE Zaysan Airport, was characterized by a temperature of -6°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 247°.
The final approach to runway 27 at UASE Zaysan Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 271.0° at 4 nautical miles and 720 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 404 meters and a touchdown speed of 91 knots. The touchdown rate was perfect at -39 feet per minute (fpm), and the runway touchdown alignment was also perfect.
The total landing distance was 722 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. Following landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took less than 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 288 nautical miles, with a total flight time of 98 minutes. The aircraft used 1,098 kilograms of fuel during the journey.
The Beechcraft King Air 350 successfully landed at UASE Zaysan Airport, achieving a score of 99.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 271.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 720 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the local weather conditions.
The temperature at the time of landing was -6°C, and the wind was blowing at a speed of 2 knots from a direction of 247°. This resulted in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 2 knots, which the pilot effectively managed during the landing. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was maintained at 100 knots, indicating a well-executed approach.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft performed well, with a touchdown speed of 91 knots and a touchdown rate of -39 feet per minute (fpm). This is considered a perfect touchdown rate, as it indicates a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's skill and attention to detail.
The landing distance of 722 meters was 48% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilot was able to maintain a high level of control and precision throughout the landing. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to smoothly and safely bring the aircraft to a stop.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilot demonstrating exceptional skill and control throughout the approach and landing phases. The aircraft's performance was impressive, and the landing was executed with precision and safety in mind.
