Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,169 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 535 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a British Aerospace 146-200, then departed from runway 31 at YPGV Gove Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,423 meters, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 126 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 21 knots from a direction of 160 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 10 knots and a tailwind of 18 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile northwest of YPGV Gove Airport and rising from an altitude of 969 feet above sea level to 28,128 feet above sea level. This climb, which covered a distance of 109 nautical miles, took 20 minutes and resulted in an increase of 27,159 feet in altitude.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 67 minutes and covered a distance of 426 nautical miles. The cruise phase began at a latitude of -13.1455551 and a longitude of 138.450729. After the cruise phase, the aircraft began its enroute descent, which started 13 miles northwest of YBYN Brooklyn Mount Carbine. The descent took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 49 nautical miles, resulting in a decrease of 26,610 feet in altitude from 27,999 feet above sea level to 1,389 feet above sea level.
The final approach to runway 15 at YBCS Cairns International Airport was made from the northwest, with the aircraft heading 156.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,359 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 15, which had a length of 3,169 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 127 knots. The touchdown point was 111 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 119 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was smooth at -141 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 3.1 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 180 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 8 knots. The total landing distance was 1,262 meters, which accounted for 40% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took approximately 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 592 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 93 minutes. The aircraft used 5 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The British Aerospace 146-200 aircraft successfully landed at YBCS Cairns International Airport, achieving a score of 99.1%. The final approach to runway 15 was initiated from the north-west, with a heading of 156.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,359 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a threshold speed of 127 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown point was located 111 meters beyond the touchdown zone, indicating a slight overrun. However, the touchdown speed of 119 knots was also deemed good, and the touchdown rate of -141 feet per minute was smooth, suggesting a controlled descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 3.1 meters, which may have been due to factors such as wind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 21°C and a wind speed of 9 knots from 180°. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 knots, while the headwind component was 8 knots, which may have contributed to the slight misalignment.
The total landing distance of 1,262 meters was 40% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft was well under control during the landing phase. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating good control and handling characteristics.
