Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out. These checks are the approach's score.
At the 500 ft gate: centreline 1.9° off, against a 1° limit.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,671 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 792 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 777F taxied to runway 23L at NZAA Auckland International Airport and commenced the departure roll. The aircraft used a takeoff distance of 1,021 m, representing 28 % of the runway, and lifted off at 167 kt. Local conditions were 16 °C with a wind of 15 kt from 280°, including a 7 kt cross-wind component and a 13 kt head-wind.
During the en-route climb the airplane rose from 1,049 ft asl to 1,541 ft asl, gaining 492 ft in 1 minute while covering 4 nm over the Auckland area.
Level cruise began 3 miles south of NZAA and continued for 4 minutes, during which the aircraft travelled 11 nm at a steady altitude.
The final approach to runway 23L was conducted under the same temperature of 16 °C, a wind of 14 kt from 280°, a 7 kt cross-wind and a 12 kt head-wind.
Descent from 953 ft agl to 60 ft agl was completed in 66 seconds, and the aircraft met the stabilisation gate criteria.
Landing was made on runway 23L, whose length is 3,671 m and which offered a good threshold height. The threshold speed was slightly above the target at 153 kt. Touchdown occurred 377 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 140 kt, a touchdown rate of minus 284 fpm, and a runway touchdown position offset 9.6 m from the centreline. The total landing distance recorded was 1,300 m, equal to 35 % of the runway.
Runway rollout showed a slight alignment deviation of 8.3 m from the centreline before the aircraft came to a stop.
In total the flight covered 21 nm, taking 7, and consumed 1,217 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 777F approached runway 23L at NZAA Auckland International Airport on a final descent from 953 ft agl to 60 ft agl in 66 seconds, meeting the stabilisation gates and therefore being recorded as stabilised. Local conditions were 16 °C with a wind of 14 kt from 280°, providing a 12 kt head-wind component and a 7 kt cross-wind component.
At threshold the aircraft’s speed was slightly above target at 153 kt and the threshold height was reported as good, indicating the aircraft was correctly positioned for the flare.
Touchdown occurred 377 m beyond the designated touchdown zone with a speed of 140 kt, noted as a little fast, and a fair vertical rate of minus 284 fpm. The touchdown point was misaligned by 9.6 m from the centreline and the total landing distance measured 1 300 m, representing 35 % of the runway length.
During rollout the aircraft remained slightly off centreline, deviating by 8.3 m, before exiting the runway.
Refine the touchdown point to lie closer to the intended zone and tighten centreline tracking on both touchdown and rollout to bring the alignment errors within tighter tolerances.
