Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,738 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,738 m of the 2,483 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 609 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Frankfurt Airport, EDDF, taking 18 minutes and covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. Departure roll took place on runway 18, with a takeoff distance of 2,350 meters, which was 59% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 172 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its initial cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 20°C temperature and winds of 11 knots at 43 degrees. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the tailwind component was 8 knots. The enroute climb started 2 miles west of Moerfelden-Walldorf, Hessen, Germany, and reached an altitude of 23,924 feet above sea level, an increase of 22,521 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 67 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, starting overhead Landscheid, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, and lasting 10 minutes, covering 76 nautical miles. This was followed by another enroute climb, starting 4 miles southeast of Chemery-sur-Bar, Grand Est, France, which reached an altitude of 32,697 feet above sea level, an increase of 8,769 feet in 9 minutes, covering a distance of 70 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 1 mile southwest of Faverolles, Hauts-de-France, France, and lasting 60 minutes, covering 424 nautical miles. This was followed by another enroute climb, starting 60 miles north of Llanes, Principality of Asturias, Spain, which reached an altitude of 34,232 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,949 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 25 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, starting 36 miles north of Ribadesella, Principality of Asturias, Spain, and lasting 113 minutes, covering 763 nautical miles. As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, starting 87 miles northeast of LPPS Porto Santo Airport Vila Baleira, Madeira, Portugal, and descending from 34,320 feet above sea level to 2,042 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,279 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 110 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 23 at LPMA Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo was made from the north-east, heading 225.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,297 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 23, which had a length of 2,483 meters. The threshold height was above target, and the threshold speed was slightly above target at 147 knots.
The touchdown point was 192 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 145 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -283 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.4 meters from the centreline. Local weather conditions at the time of landing were 22°C temperature and winds of 20 knots at 220 degrees, with a crosswind component of 2 knots and a headwind component of 20 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,657 meters, which was 67% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 12.5 meters from the centreline. Taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,550 nautical miles, taking 252 minutes, and the aircraft used 10,881 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo, scoring an overall performance of 86.5%. The final approach to runway 23 was initiated from the north-east, heading 225.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,297 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 192 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is slightly off-target. The touchdown speed of 145 knots was a bit faster than the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have applied a bit more braking than necessary. The touchdown rate of -283 feet per minute (fpm) was considered fair, suggesting that the aircraft was able to slow down relatively quickly after touchdown.
The runway touchdown position was also slightly misaligned by 5.4 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the final approach. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 22°C and a headwind of 20 knots at 220°. The crosswind was minimal, at 2 knots, which reduced the risk of any significant deviations during the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,657 meters was 67% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 12.5 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing performance of the Airbus A321 at Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo was satisfactory, with a score of 86.5%. While there were some minor deviations in the touchdown position and runway rollout alignment, the aircraft was able to land safely and efficiently, taking into account the favorable weather conditions.
