Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,739 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 705 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The Airbus A320 then departed from runway 29 at FMMI Ivato Airport in Antananarivo, Madagascar. The takeoff distance was 1,495 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 148 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 300 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 9 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb shortly after departing the airport, starting 1 mile west of FMMI Ivato Airport and climbing to an altitude of 37,573 feet above sea level. This climb phase covered a distance of 142 nautical miles and took 22 minutes to complete, with the aircraft increasing its altitude by 32,328 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 17 miles southwest of FMXP Ankotrofotsy-Soatany in the Menabe Region of Madagascar. This phase lasted for 125 minutes and covered a distance of 874 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 4 miles west of FADK Mubatuba Airport in Mubatuba, South Africa. The descent phase took 24 minutes to complete and covered a distance of 99 nautical miles, with the aircraft decreasing its altitude by 36,133 feet from 37,517 feet above sea level to 1,384 feet above sea level.
The final approach to runway 06 at FALE King Shaka International Airport was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading 37.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,073 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing was made on runway 06, which had a length of 3,739 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target speed at 156 knots.
The touchdown point was 289 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 144 knots, which was faster than the target speed. The touchdown rate was also hard at -428 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 18 knots from a direction of 76 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 11 knots and a headwind of 14 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,361 meters, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.3 meters from the centerline. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,124 nautical miles, and the flight took 180 minutes to complete. The aircraft used a total of 6,978 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at King Shaka International Airport, achieving a score of 87.8%. The final approach to runway 06 was conducted from the southwest, with a heading of 37.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,073 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 289 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively long distance. The touchdown speed of 144 knots was faster than the target speed, indicating that the pilot may have been able to flare the aircraft more aggressively to reduce the touchdown speed. However, the touchdown rate of -428 feet per minute was considered hard, suggesting that the aircraft may have touched down with a significant amount of energy.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained a stable and aligned approach to the runway. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 31°C, with a wind speed of 18 knots from a direction of 76°. The crosswind component was 11 knots, while the headwind component was 14 knots.
The total landing distance of 1,361 meters was 36% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 9.3 meters from the centerline, indicating that the pilot may have experienced some difficulty in maintaining a straight course during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, but there were some areas for improvement, particularly in terms of touchdown speed and touchdown rate. The pilot's ability to maintain a perfect runway touchdown alignment and a relatively short landing distance were notable achievements, however.
