Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,119 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,119 m of the 3,171 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 816 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Vancouver International Airport (CYVR), the Boeing 777-300 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 16 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. As it reached the runway, the aircraft started its departure roll on runway 26L, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 177 knots. The takeoff distance of 1,455 meters accounted for 44% of the runway length, with the aircraft clearing the ground at a height of 1,054 feet above sea level.
As the aircraft climbed away from Vancouver, it transitioned into an enroute climb, reaching a cruising altitude of 38,481 feet above sea level in 17 minutes and covering a distance of 115 nautical miles. The climb phase was followed by a prolonged enroute level cruise, which lasted for 187 minutes and spanned 1,611 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 16 miles southeast of Tobermory Airport (CNR4) and descending from 37,860 feet to 1,855 feet above sea level in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 131 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 23 at Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport (CYYZ) was initiated from the northeast, with the aircraft aligning perfectly with the runway.
The Boeing 777-300 touched down on runway 23 at CYYZ, with a touchdown point located 465 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 137 knots was slightly above the target, but the touchdown rate of -131 feet per minute was smooth. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also spot on. After taxiing to the parking area, the aircraft had completed a total flight distance of 1,869 nautical miles, using 25,224 kilograms of fuel in the process. The total flight duration was 247 minutes, with the aircraft experiencing various weather conditions throughout its journey, including temperatures ranging from 20°C to 1°C and wind speeds of up to 13 knots.
The Boeing 777-300 touched down on runway 23 at CYYZ Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport, marking a satisfactory conclusion to the approach. The aircraft's descent from 1,298 feet above ground level (agl) to the threshold height of 59 feet agl was slightly above target, but the crew's control and management of the aircraft's speed ensured a smooth touchdown. The threshold speed of 146 knots was also slightly above the target, but the touchdown speed of 137 knots, although a little fast, did not compromise the safety of the landing.
The touchdown point was located 465 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which, although not ideal, did not result in any significant deviations from the centerline. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, a testament to the crew's skill and attention to detail. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 1°C and a gentle headwind of 5 knots, contributed to a relatively straightforward landing. The crosswind of 6 knots was well within manageable limits, and the crew's handling of the aircraft was commensurate with the conditions.
The total landing distance of 2,103 meters, representing 66% of the runway length, was within acceptable parameters. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, demonstrating the crew's ability to maintain control and stability throughout the landing phase. Overall, the landing was scored 91.3%, a respectable achievement considering the slight deviations from target in terms of threshold height and speed.
