Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,452 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,452 ft of the 10,560 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,272 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, taking 9 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 36R, with a takeoff distance of 6,792 feet, which was 51% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 174 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it encountered local weather conditions of a temperature of 52°F and winds of 4 knots at 330°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 3 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile south east of Grapevine, Texas, and reached an altitude of 33,674 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,095 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 103 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 6 miles west of TT40 Burkett Ranch/Jackson Pasture Airport Graham, Texas, and lasted for 93 minutes, covering a distance of 583 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 9 miles west of KSNO Snowflake Airport Snowflake, Arizona, and descended from 33,628 feet to 3,937 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,691 feet in 26 minutes, covering a distance of 126 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again 2 miles east of Avondale, Arizona, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent 2 miles east of Tolleson, Arizona, and descended from 3,548 feet to 2,382 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,167 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 08 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was made from the west, with a heading of 90.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,251 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 08, which had a length of 10,560 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 146 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 1,266 feet, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 141 knots. The touchdown rate was firm at -353 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 63°F and winds of 4 knots at 90°, with a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 5,187 feet, which was 49% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the aircraft then taxied to the parking area, taking 2 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 830 nautical miles, taking 152 minutes, and the aircraft used 14,506 pounds of fuel.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX) with a score of 97.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,251 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 08, which has a length of 10,560 feet.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a threshold height that was considered good. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 146 knots. The touchdown distance of 1,266 feet was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 141 knots was a little fast, but the firm touchdown rate of -353 feet per minute (fpm) suggests that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact effectively.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 63°F and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 90°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a headwind of 4 knots, which helped to slow the aircraft down during the approach.
The total landing distance of 5,187 feet was 49% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This suggests that the aircraft was able to slow down quickly and efficiently after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with a high score of 97.8%. The aircraft performed well in terms of touchdown height, touchdown speed, and touchdown rate, and the runway touchdown alignment and rollout alignment were both excellent.
