Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,094 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 929 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, then departed from runway 36 at RJGG Chubu Centrair International Airport in Japan. The takeoff distance was 1,411 meters, which is 40% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 164 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 7°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 20°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 3 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead RJGG Chubu Centrair International Airport, and climbed from 968 feet above sea level to 34,993 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,024 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 175 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started overhead Sano, Japan, and lasted for 45 minutes, covering a distance of 401 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 35,158 feet above sea level to 37,009 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,851 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 31 nautical miles. This was followed by another level cruise, which started at a latitude of 40.433968 and a longitude of 147.1157589, and lasted for 172 minutes, covering a distance of 1,510 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 37,073 feet above sea level to 38,992 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,919 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 28 nautical miles. This was followed by another level cruise, which started at a latitude of 51.9205392 and a longitude of -179.7176476, and lasted for 207 minutes, covering a distance of 1,802 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 39,481 feet above sea level to 40,623 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,142 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 14 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started at a latitude of 46.356197 and a longitude of -135.1413686, and lasted for 124 minutes, covering a distance of 1,057 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent, starting 15 miles south of Malibu, California, and descended from 41,005 feet above sea level to 1,671 feet above sea level, a decrease of 39,334 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 133 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 27 at KSAN San Diego International Airport was from the east, heading 286.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,638 feet above ground level. However, the aircraft went around, climbing to 61 feet above ground level. The landing was then completed on runway 27, with a runway length of 2,094 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 135 knots.
The touchdown point was 515 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 128 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -245 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.5 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 18°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 160°. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the tailwind was 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 1,429
The Boeing 777-200ER aircraft successfully landed at San Diego International Airport (KSAN) on runway 27. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 286.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,638 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold speed of 136 kt, which is within the acceptable range for a safe landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold height was slightly above the target, but still within a safe margin. The touchdown point was located 515 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively long distance. However, the touchdown speed of 128 kt was good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and stability during the landing.
The touchdown rate of -245 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or oscillation during the landing. Nevertheless, the runway touchdown position was only slightly misaligned by 4.5 meters from the centerline, which is a minor deviation.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 18°C and a gentle wind of 2 kt from 160°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 kt, and the tailwind component was even weaker at 1 kt. These conditions contributed to a smooth and stable landing.
The total landing distance of 1,429 meters was 68% of the runway length, which is a relatively long distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and stability during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with some minor deviations from the ideal performance. The aircraft's good threshold speed, stable touchdown, and smooth rollout alignment were all positive aspects of the landing. However, the slightly above-target threshold height and fair touchdown rate suggest that there may be room for improvement in the aircraft's landing performance.
