Improve the takeoff
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
Side view — the last 465 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 465 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 53 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 19 at EGJK Tarn Farm Airfield, where the aircraft took off after a distance of 121 meters, which accounted for 26% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 52 knots. At the time of departure, the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 270 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 0 knots.
As the aircraft entered the left-hand pattern from runway 19, it covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in 19 seconds. The left-hand pattern crosswind leg was slightly longer, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles in 104 seconds. The pattern downwind turn was also 3 nautical miles long, with an angle to the runway of 48.6 degrees. The downwind leg itself was short, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in 10 seconds.
The final approach to runway 01 at EGJK Tarn Farm Airfield was made from the south, with a heading of 10.0 degrees at an altitude of 35.5 meters above ground level. The landing on runway 01 was successful, with a threshold speed that was slightly below the target speed of 44 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 51 meters, and the touchdown speed was also good at 43 knots. The touchdown rate was excellent at -0.5 meters per second, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as at the time of departure, with a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 270 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 0 knots. The total flight distance was 7 nautical miles, and the flight used 1 kilogram of fuel.
The aircraft, identified as Sirius, successfully landed at EGJK Tarn Farm Airfield, achieving a high score of 98.8%. The final approach to runway 01 was conducted from the south, with a heading of 10.0° at an altitude of 35.5 meters above ground level (agl) and a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, which has a length of 465 meters. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed, coming in at 44 knots. Despite this, the touchdown distance was good, measuring 51 meters, and the touchdown speed was also within acceptable limits at 43 knots.
One of the notable aspects of this landing was the excellent touchdown rate, which was recorded at -0.5 meters per second. This indicates that the aircraft touched down smoothly and with minimal deceleration. Additionally, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was well-aligned with the runway as it touched down.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 270°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 0 knots, which did not pose any significant challenges for the aircraft. Overall, the landing was executed smoothly and safely, with the aircraft achieving a high score and demonstrating excellent control and precision.
