Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,690 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,181 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking to the runway at LaGuardia Airport, taking 21 minutes and covering 2 nautical miles. Departure roll occurred on runway 13, with a takeoff distance of 5,130 feet, which was 73% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 150 knots.
As the aircraft climbed, it started at 1,028 feet above sea level and reached 7,832 feet in just 5 minutes, covering 9 nautical miles. This initial climb phase was followed by a level cruise phase that lasted 20 minutes, during which the aircraft remained at a constant altitude of 7,832 feet and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The aircraft then began another climb phase, this time from 7,832 feet to 35,911 feet, an increase of 28,079 feet in 24 minutes, covering 91 nautical miles. This climb phase was followed by a level cruise phase that lasted 45 minutes, during which the aircraft remained at a constant altitude of 35,911 feet and covered 193 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began a descent phase from 35,980 feet to 35,300 feet, a decrease of 680 feet in 2 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase that lasted 11 minutes, during which it remained at a constant altitude of 35,407 feet and covered 47 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another descent phase, this time from 35,407 feet to 6,028 feet, a decrease of 29,379 feet in 38 minutes, covering 99 nautical miles. This descent phase was followed by a level cruise phase that lasted 11 minutes, during which the aircraft remained at a constant altitude of 4,817 feet and covered 22 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its final destination, it began a descent phase from 4,817 feet to 3,457 feet, a decrease of 1,360 feet in 3 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a final level cruise phase that lasted 23 minutes, during which it remained at a constant altitude of 3,457 feet and covered 36 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 36R at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 356.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,291 feet above ground level. The landing was made on the runway, with a touchdown distance of 1,190 feet and a touchdown speed of 134 knots, which was slightly above the target speed.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind speed of 3 knots at 48 degrees. The crosswind was 2 knots, and the headwind was 2 knots. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centerline by 11 feet.
The total landing distance was 3,318 feet, which was 38% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking from the runway took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 519 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 175 minutes. The aircraft used 10,099 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (KCLT) on runway 36R, achieving a score of 99.5%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the south, heading 356.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,291 feet above ground level (agl).
The final approach was executed with good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 137 kt, which is a common occurrence due to various factors such as aircraft weight, air density, and pilot technique. The touchdown distance of 1,190 feet was within the acceptable range, demonstrating good control and precision during the landing.
Despite a slightly fast touchdown speed of 134 kt, the aircraft maintained a fair touchdown rate of -219 feet per minute (fpm). This indicates that the aircraft was able to absorb the impact of touchdown without excessive deceleration, which can be beneficial for the aircraft's structural integrity.
However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 11 feet from the centerline, which may require some adjustments to the aircraft's alignment during future landings. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 41°F and a light wind of 3 kt from 48°, resulting in a negligible crosswind and headwind component.
The total landing distance of 3,318 feet was 38% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain its alignment and direction after touchdown, which is essential for safe and efficient taxiing.
Overall, the landing was executed with good precision and control, and the aircraft was able to maintain a high score despite some minor deviations from the target parameters.
