Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,282 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 982 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at ESMS Malmö Sturup Airport, a process that took 11 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 35, with the aircraft taking off after covering 45% of the runway's length. The takeoff distance was 1,262 meters, and the liftoff speed was 160 knots.
As the aircraft climbed into the air, it encountered local weather conditions of 13°C temperature and winds of 12 knots at 99 degrees. The crosswind was 11 knots, while the tailwind was 3 knots. The enroute climb started 1 mile north of the airport and took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,272 feet above sea level to 33,231 feet, an increase of 31,959 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 82 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 3 miles northwest of Vislanda, a town in Kronoberg County, Sweden, and lasted for 9 minutes, covering a distance of 115 nautical miles. The descent started 5 miles south of ESVE Stegeborg Stegeborg, a town in Östergötland County, Sweden, and took the aircraft from an altitude of 33,226 feet to 1,395 feet, a decrease of 31,831 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 83 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 01L at ESSA Stockholm-Arlanda Airport was made from the south, with the aircraft heading 10.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,271 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway. The landing took place on a runway with a length of 3,282 meters, and the threshold height was good. The threshold speed was also good at 137 knots.
The touchdown point was 558 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 120 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -404 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 7.6 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 7.9 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 7°C temperature and winds of 7 knots at 60 degrees, with a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The total landing distance was 1,420 meters, which was 43% of the runway's length. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 289 nautical miles, and the flight used -307 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at ESSA Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, with a score of 86.7%. The final approach to runway 01L was initiated from the south, with a heading of 10.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,271 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 137 knots.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 558 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively significant deviation. However, the touchdown speed of 120 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing. Unfortunately, the touchdown rate was hard, with a descent rate of -404 feet per minute (fpm), which may have contributed to the slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position by 7.6 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 7°C and a wind speed of 7 knots from a direction of 60°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was also 5 knots. These conditions were not particularly challenging for the aircraft, and the pilot should have been able to maintain control during the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,420 meters was 43% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 7.9 meters from the centerline, indicating that the pilot may have had some difficulty maintaining control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, the pilot demonstrated good control of the aircraft during the final approach and touchdown phases. However, the hard touchdown rate and slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position and rollout alignment indicate that there is room for improvement in terms of landing technique and control.
